It may have taken a while to put in the mail but the postal service sure did rush this one here once they had it. From the post to my pocket.

Mail call today yielded up a fine HOK! I think this is probably a Pal R3267, it is 3 3/4" and has black composition handles, half stops all around. Swedges on the clip and sheepfoot blades. Still walks and talks but not quite like that ol' Queen City last week! A very solid knife. Another thank you to TripleF.

Well, Greg, I think you just pushed me over the edge on that CV Tribal-Lock. Yours has such rich color and it pairs naturally with a few knives I've recently picked up. I'm nearly out of excuses!

Got this from Dennis today. The knife I would have bought when I was 10, so thanks for making me feel young again Dennis.

Today's mail contained a Robeson 622064 pen knife in black synthetic. I'm a little confused by the tang stamp on this one - it doesn't match any of the tangs shown in Charlie's excellent list of Robeson tang stamps. It looks like the 1940-1964, except that it does not have the "U.S.A." under the block "SHUREDGE". Is that normal for 622064? Maybe because it is too small to fit three lines? I assume that's also why the pattern number is split onto two lines on the pen blade.

EDIT: Oh! I think there is a "U.S.A." hidden in the bolster! I didn't even see it (even with a loupe) until I posted the picture and could blow it up on my monitor!

That bottom picture looks like a fine knife. What is its' length? I'm not familiar with that pattern of Schrade. I reckon it would be called a Trapper? Whatever it is I like its' looks!

SCAGEL Queen of the Witch
Have wanted a Scagel for years, like a siren song/witches spell on me. Can't let it go, but they always cost way more than I want to pay, never found one I could afford that I liked. Finally found one that didn't break the bank but I paid more than I thought it was worth. In my mind something didn't add up to me. But finally this one came and it's a beautiful knife, great concept, blades, through and through opening hole, size, design, aesthetic. Love all that. That's why I wanted one. And I love the way this one looks. And it's even pretty tight and decent opening and closing, good snap, walk and talk, most fit and some finish. But the blades are way off center, the spear right next to the liner at the tip, the grinds way uneven side to side and the spine line looks botched, the spine and edge are not straight, the blade thickness not consistent. And that same old grindy, gritty action. Maybe that doesn't really impact performance, it still has a good action and snap. Still functions well. But it doesn't feel smooth. I like smooth. It's not surprising me with the product or impressing me more than I expected like some knives. And check out the pins, it looks like someone took smooth pin heads and dinged them up with a nail or file or something. Check these out, I have never seen a bunch of pins so roughly finished. Looks like they pounded them on the asphalt. How they didn't scuff the antler in the process is the miracle here. This one looked great, but after a close look it has several disappointing issues. About par for the course. Which doesn't surprise me at all for Queen Witch. Maybe if you use the "b" word which rhymes with witch when describing the Queen issues, you know what I mean, because thats what it is for me again. This is about the 7th Queen product in a row over the last few years or more that I have bought and either returned, or re-sold because I didn't even want it after it was in hand. What I can't figure out is why these things command so much dough on the open market for disguised Queens? I don't know but it's not top quality. Could be rarity, fad, percieved prestige or who knows what? But it's not high level of quality at least on this one. Sheeeeesh.

Thanks, sunknife! Both #77s are perfect and I really couldn't be happier with them. The ironwood grain is simply awesome and I can't really imagine leaving it in a tube forever...

Thanks, treefarmer! It's a GEC-made Schrade Pioneer Trapper, S/N #357 of 400, 4½" closed, built on the #23 frame with the same blade profiles GEC used last in 2014. Brown pickbone handles and 1095 steel. Both blades snap like a bear trap and the master is pretty close to a nailbreaker (8.5 or 9 out of 10 pull, depending on how strong the fingernail is that day ). A significant hunk of knife.

Ivoryman, good review of your Northwoods 'Scagel'. The high prices (popularity in supply/demand) began with marketing hype when they were first released (2009 ?) and now people go for them because of the "Northwoods" branding.
Real peened pins look almost like spun pins. Old time cutlers were skilled craftsmen who did not make hammer marks on pin heads.
I had the first release Scagel, a single blade with convex grind. It was a solid good knife, very strong, not delicate in any way.
