All About Pocket Knives

Thanks. It is a particularly 'good score' in part because i paid less than the price for a basic single blade GEC knife. This is not often the case with vintage Wostenholm whose pocket knives are still considered among the best ever made.
It has "England" in the marking so made after 1891, but how 'recent' might it have been made ? The extremely high quality of the best Sheffield knives began a drift downward with WW I and by WW II the quality of Sheffield knives was no longer outstanding.
I will post this knife after receiving it and hope there might be some feature that allows some idea of date it was made.

I am thinking by the looks of the stag early part of the 1900s as to possible date... no "Oil the Joints" on pile side tangs which to me is later years of the 1900s...

Just curious and not related to dating - but what is the closed length?

I picked up a Wostenholm Whittler at the NCCA show of a similar vintage.. maybe slightly earlier given the pressed stag handles on mine.. I'll get photos and post... the master blade on my whittler has one of the widest or thickest tangs I have ever seen on a blade - about 3/16" at widest part and the blade taper looking at the spine from tang to tip is amazing in my eyes ....

Picked up two interesting pieces today.
First is a 1950's era Italian stiletto made by ROSCO.Blade is full but shows some grind marks that are coming out fairly easily. The spring is missing;there are a couple cracks in the horn handles;and the little leaf spring that holds the button in the closed position is broken. $20.
The second is a real oddity. a two blade equal end pen stamped New York Knife Co. Walden (no NY)one straight and one curved.What is unusual is the aluminum bolsters with a jimped design on the edge near the handles. I'm guessing that it was made when aluminum was a rare material to use in a knife(pre-1900).Pearl is crack free and fiery when cleaned up. $18.

A couple of A.G. Russel knives arrived today. Very impressed with the fit & finish and overall quality as I've always been with any knife that has Mr. Russell's name on it. I'll be getting more for sure. Already ordered one, in fact.

Also, Mike (XX Case XX) surprised me with this awesome Bark River t-shirt. It's been a great day for opening mail!

Here's a little booty I got in this week. I'm working hard on my Camillus collection so they are the stars tonight. First is a decent little short line TipTop #11 barlow with sawcut bone handles. Next is a very nice etched 9518 junior cattle knife marked Sta-Sharp High Carbon Steel USA.. Next is a SFO for Collector Knives,a #43 with smooth orange Camel Bone. And last but not least a new a new home for my Camillus 72 Show girls.

Sweet Cattle knife gsmith. Love those bones. Also saw the beautiful orange bone 43. Congrats. I saw orange smooth bone on KniveShipFree. Did not know Collectorknives had them too. Strange, usually Mike and Derrick don't have the same color in the same run of a pattern that I've seen before. Very interesting. Here's the KSF ones. Seems to be many left too. Can take time choosing, which is a luxury not always available on a GEC release.

Well that is unusual I-man I didn't think KSF would get any of those because the GEC production schedule mentioned only Collector Knives for that run but what do I know. It's a pretty handle maybe Derrick just had to have some. Phillip and

GEC may have changed the Production Schedule to correct a mistake but today it makes no mention of the Orange Camel Bone being an SFO..
No mention of SFO on the individual pic either. Apparently the Orange Camel Bone was a regular run. There are at least a couple of other dealers that have them too.

Well I'll be darned I must have misread that. At any rate,it's a right pretty handle.

Oh, you mean the Folding Bowie's? Uh huh....and one is a monster!!!

I know this is not a question we knife-nuts ever ask, but I'll ask it anyway: In what situation is a giant folding Bowie knife the right answer to the question: "What knife should I carry today?" I mean, at that point, why not just carry a big fixed blade?? Or a two-handed medieval great sword?

Great question TwoFlowers. I have no answer. I've seen lots of knives that don't seem to me to be built for practical use or functionality. Like they were deliberately dreamed up or imagined and created for novelty, one-of-a-kind things, or who knows what?

I have absolutely no use for a hoof pick but something told me that I needed this A.G. Russell Horseman'e knife in my collection. It arrived today and like all knives with A.G.'s name on them, the build quality is exceptional.

That's a beast of a knife

I've actually already thought of something but I haven't tried it yet. I work in a warehouse and often have to go up on a lift to pick items from the upper shelves. Sometimes a box gets pushed back too far on the shelf to reach while standing on the lift. The hoof pick would give me about another 6 inches of reach if I hold onto the butt end of the knife.

We have a 3 foot long tool for this but inevitably, it's not on the lift when I need it. I think the hoof pick would work in a pinch as long as the box isn't too far back on the shelf.
