These pics are from our walk yesterday. It was a semi-overcast day and the light gave me some trouble, it seemed like I got glare at any angle. And of course, as you can see in the last pic, Sir William Barker McTerrier had to inspect the shot at close quarters to make sure I was doing it right.

Still turned out pretty well, glare notwithstanding. Sometimes a little glare isn't a bad thing...can actually make the pic look more true-to-life realistic instead of "studio set" arranged

Captured this "Hummingbird" perched on night blooming cereus whilst strolling around my backyard this morning. Really loving this GEC #13 Whip....it's become my current EDC.

Thanks Q. When I take outdoor pics I generally take what the environment offers. Your "Hummingbird" pics are outstanding, I love the way the handle material morphs with the light.

Speaking of "studio set" arrangements, I've been told that this is one of my best photo's. A fellow collector even had it made into a vanity license plate for me as a Christmas gift.

Mahalo Squach I tend to be the same way with my photography and just try to work with whatever the environment provides in terms of light and settings. I also tend to take a lot of shots just to get the few I'm eventually satisfied with enough to feel are worth posting. And, BTW, I didn't mean to disparage "studio set" arrangements or suggest they are somehow less interesting, valid or artistic than spontaneous, spur-of-the-moment photographs, just that the conditions, being less controlled, give the spontaneous photos a different aspect that seems more natural. Studio set photos generally have a more posed and professional feel to them to my eye, much like a still life painting. Case in point, the Canoe with Liberty Coin Belt Buckle which was clearly a studio set arrangement and is a fabulous, professional grade photo


Took my old pals Paxton & Gallagher with me to the market this morning looking for some colorful new settings to shoot around in. Here's what we came home with:

Thanks Q. I'm probably my own worst critic. I didn't feel the photo was that good because I wasn't able to keep my reflection completely out of the shot but others have really liked it.

That's a fine old knife, I really like the bone handles. Especially in the shot with the red onions.

Mahalo, T-Dog Until I took those pics in the grocery store I have always been alone when doing knife photos. But in the store I got one or two suspicious sidelong glances from other customers as I was positioning my pocket knife on the produce! At one point, a store employee even started shadowing me, pretending to sweep the floor. Oh, the things we do for art and our hobby!!!

I really like the backgrounds you used in this set of pics. That wood is loaded with character that contrasts nicely with the comparatively plainer character of the bone knife handles. It does overwhelm those particular knives a bit, though, as it draws my attention away from them...I couldn't stop staring at the wood which has so much "motion" in it, it practically looks alive...or like an ocean wave. Very cool

The other background of sun-baked adobe (or brick? or earth?) is great for the texture but also its light and warmth. I can almost feel the heat of the sun radiating off it. Of all the elements I usually look for in photographs, temperature has never been one of them....until now. Interesting Definitely something I'm going to pay more attention to from now on.

This page has a fine assemblage of photos - I cannot pick a favorite. One thing I like is that several of the knives on this page have really nice patina. Great photos of those knives!
