I've found the train enthusiasts to be a nice, friendly bunch, much like the knife/AAPK group.

I rarely take modern train shots, Iβm usually alone and railroad areas abound with some sketchy folks and more NO TRESPASSING signs than there used to be. On my way home from Fayetteville a couple weeks ago I drove through Warsaw and saw all this CSX power tied down. OH

I would love to visit that museum sometime, actually just Roanoke in general. Haven't been there since my grad school days, went with a buddy who was in the A.I. program to see a roaming robot that self-docked. Some guy had it in his garage. That was the first time I had Thai food too. It would be about a 4 hr. drive one way for us.
So much railroad history there since Norfolk and Western was headquartered there. It's like the Huntington of Chesapeake and Ohio RR.

Had the PRR GG1 fired up for yesterday's Three Rail Thursday main event-
Pulling PRR lighted passenger cars, trolley duty and a holding NYC Dreyfus on deck as well. Incidentally, the last GG1 ran in October 1983, Matawan to Newark in Tuscan Red livery. There's a YouTube tribute to it as well-

Nice Lionels and enjoyed the GG-1 film Red Ryder. I used to see the GG-1 (always in black paint for Amtrak or Penn Central) when I was stationed at Aberdeen Proving Ground MD in 1976. They didn't stop at the Aberdeen station there and came through under the wire at extremely fast speed. Whichever gate you used to leave or enter APG you crossed the mainline, there were constant safety reminders on post that if you saw that engine you were already dead! I caught a few sitting still in the yard at DC in late 1975. OH
Ps my old slides are deteriorating, scanned them just in time but they are not the best looking, color is gone.

Thanks, David.
Those are awesome shots, OH! The GG's ran under wire as far south as Alexandria, but I didn't arrive until 1989 and they stopped running in 1983. I can only imagine how cool they were to see in operation.

Thank you John and David.
John, a quick story - the GG-1 running through Aberdeen MD was impressive. I used to go have Saturday morning breakfast with a buddy at the dinner across from the station. One morning I heard the horn in the distance, so ran from the diner to the covered station platform just in time for the train to pass. Too late I realized it was on the inside track, it dropped into the curve and barreled by, I backed up to the wall, wind tunnel effect felt like I was going to be sucked in! My fatigue cap flew off never to be seen again. My buddy had to take me straight to the PX after breakfast to buy a new cap and butterbar. What power!! OH

Great shots everybody!
I've posted a number of pictures of these German E-LOK'S that I took in the GemΓΌnden am Main train station. Well yesterday there was a documentary film about them being built in Munich, Bayern, Germany. So I took a few pictures off the TV that have some facts about them if anyone is interested in that.
