All About Pocket Knives

I picked up a couple knives from TripleF (Scott) and they came in today! I was eagerly anticipating them arriving and they did not disappoint. One is a J A Henckels with some knarly stag on it. I now have two of these and I will get the other one out and post it in the Henckel post. The other is a Case USA 6214 1/2 red bone. It is awesome as well. Hope you enjoy the pictures that follow.

Not as striking as some of the knives shown above, but I just picked up this Parker-Edwards smooth white bone mini trapper and I gotta say, I'm impressed. It was made in the USA in 1986 and for an inexpensive knife, it's very well made indeed. I wonder why the USA made Parker brand never caught the attention of the collector market like Case did? It's every bit as good as a Case knife IMO (walk & talk, fit & finish, etc.), and in some ways even better (such as in the placement of the nail pull as compared to the clip blade on a Case 07).

IIRC Parker owned Case soon after that trapper was made. I think there's a fair-sized subset of Parker/Edwards collectors out there, I've managed to accumulate a few that caught my eye and if there's one thing Jim Parker had an eye for it was making a pocketknife that looks appealing to a collector. For better or worse he had a pretty big impact on pocket cutlery that still reverberates to this day.

Espn: What is the proper pattern name of your impressive Case?

A second question for anybody. Over the years I have frequently noted that whenever Mr. Parker's name comes up there is often a certain reservation, as if he is looked at somewhat askance; or maybe some hesitancy about his product. I don't think I am imagining this. But if no one else knows what I am referring too...well, so be it. However can anyone shed some light on my perception or on my misperception?

I believe that a lot of Parker's product is actually valued and sought by collectors (NKCA knives, Parker/Edwards knives of the 70s-80s, etc.) but his practices over the years were what gave him a reputation in certain segments of the cutlery industry. But I won't speak ill of the man mostly because of his undeniable impact on the hobby. YMMV!

Your perception is accurate. Mr Parker did thousands of knife deals some of them not entirely honest, like having knives marked with defunct old knife company names hoping some will get mistaken for vintage, etc. But what he also did was to bring a huge array of knives into being, many of them quite well made.
I'm sure others have a more direct knowledge of James Parker and can provide more specific information. Basically he did a lot of good things to promote interest in knives but along the way some who dealt with him came away feeling cheated.

I have never see a Case Folding Hunter like the Stag 4 blade one above but i have no doubt it is all original and of high value. Superb older knife.

Here are some examples of the 6465 Case Hunter Knives from Pocket Knife Traders Guide Volume 8 and Sargents American Premium guide to pocket knives. Hope this helps a little.

Keith, nice example of Case Tested XX 6465. This is an authentic Case pattern and knife. They are fairly scarce and this is the first example I have seen with the worm groove handles. A search term of "6465" on AAPK will turn up a few pictures. Here is a link to another one:

Keith's example looks to have the flat ground clip blade and the knife in the link has the Sabre ground clip blade.

Today these two showed up. A very nice Bulldog Stockman with MOP. And an always practical Opinal.

Got this little Kershaw Launch 4 today. Neat little auto. Not much bigger than a GEC #25 and Made In The U.S.A.

This VIPER came today in a trade with a fellow member I have been wanting one for a while and love this one
