All About Pocket Knives

Here's a Wabash, 3-5/8" Cigar pen slated for rehandling. The picture celluloid was totally shot. The secondary may be a replacement as it is stamped "MADE IN USA" . I don't know enough about their marks to say. J.O'.

Very recently, this horseman or farrier, pattern or style of pocket knife, arrived in a group or lot of pocket knives that I purchased. It now becomes my latest example, of old and rare, to be posted under this topic or thread. This particular pocket knife was NOT the reason for my purchase of the group or lot. However, as it turned out, it is most definitely a keeper. It will certainly be a welcomed addition to my general pocket knife accumulation. This is my first horseman or farrier pocket knife. It is an UNKNOWN, one blade, three tools (a hoof pick, a corkscrew and tweezers), 3 1/2" closed, one tang stamp (unreadable), horseman or farrier, pattern or style of pocket knife. So then, what is OK with this pocket knife? The handle sides look good and are in good shape. The blade, VERY SHARP, has a good half stop, with a good opening and closing snap. The hoof pick opens and closes as it should. The corkscrew functions properly. The tweezers are in good condition and appear to be original to the knife. So now, what is NOT OK with this pocket knife? The blade sits high and has diminished in size and shape over the years. Next to the blade, is the remaining stump of what used to be another blade or another tool. It also appears that each handle side can hold two tools, for a total of four handle tools (think Swiss Army Knife). However, only one of the four possible handle tools remains, the tweezers. But, overall, this horseman or farrier pocket knife is still in FAIR condition. It did need a little cleaning. I took some pictures and here it is.

If anyone can determine what the tang stamp says, PLEASE
let me know. I will also be attempting to figure it out.

Skip, the last line looks like "& STACEY" ?? Found a Stacey Bothers in Sheffield, 1847-1941. Levine says they were affiliated with Thomas Ward. Maybe a combined stamp?? Looks like a Sheffield style. Cool old piece. Good luck. J.O'.

I now believe the tang stamp is three lines, not two.

They show these in the early Case books but these are stamped Cattaraugus.

Recently, this pocket knife arrived in a group or lot of pocket knives that I bought. It now becomes my latest example to be posted under this topic or thread (FOR REFERENCE). I did NOT buy the group or lot of pocket knives to obtain this particular pocket knife. I am NOT adding this pocket knife to my general, pocket knife accumulation. Instead, it is going in my "broken" knife box. It is a PINE KNOT, two blades (the main blade is broken), one tang stamp, 3 1/2" closed, two springs, long main blade pull (if it wasn't broken), pocket knife. The main broken blade, front tang stamp, is the curved or arched style and says, "PINE KNOT (over) (bird image) (over) Jno W Price (written)" It appears that this pocket knife once had a shield. It does NOT have a shield now. The main blade stub has a soft half stop, but a VERY GOOD opening and closing snap. The secondary blade also has a soft half stop, along with an ok opening and closing snap. Even with the broken main blade, this pocket knife is still in FAIR condition. I had to clean it a little. I took some pictures and here it is.

The initials JNO or Jno are in fact old abbreviations for John.

It would say terre haute i believe.

Edit: you probably already know that. I took this pic from this site forever ago and don't recall who to cite. But yeah i don't think they used that stamp, looks like an imperial pen blade. I've been looking for a wabash that's not in the three digit range for a minute now. I was born in Lafayette, my family still lives in the area. I had uncles who went to Rose Holman(sp?), which is in terre haute. Let me know when you finish it!

I'm the one who posted this awful rendering of Wabash stamps (obviously I'm no artist).
I have since added one more. These are from the stamps of the ones in my collection.
I have also handled many more Wabash, I have never seen "Made In USA" stamped on a Wabash.
I agree it is a replacement blade.

Well then I shall thank you now for your artistic talents and for sharing them with the world. I assume from your avatar pic you might be from Indiana, and also probably the resident expert on Wabash cutlery.

I've swam from the banks of the muddy wabash, but never held a piece of cutlery with the name. Im hoping the knives are better than their namesake!

I have lived in Terre Haute my entire life, the reason for my interest in Wabash Cutlery.
I currently have 49 knives made by Wabash. Always looking for more!

W.R.B. were not made by Wabash. Goins says they were made by Napanoch.
They were a Terre Haute company though, Will Roll Bearing.

S Norvell , who was president of Shapleigh Hdwe. at this time, and had just left Simmons Hdwe.
c 1901-1911 made by Empire. Norvell's book "Forty Years of Hardware Sales ' is great history and a good read . Norvell went East later on and began writing weekly features for publication.

Following the above theme. This is an AF Shapleigh from the time period prior to the above. c 1888 - 1901

The above knife is an early Empire stamped DE. This Empire is a little later, but prior to the Schrade DE's. I borrowed this first picture to show the stamp that the above knife has other than the D diamond E. ( mine is harder to see) I've heard the Empire stamped DE's hardware is abbreviated HDWE and the Schrade's are HDW. That aspect of the stamp is not visible on my Empire Shapleigh stamp.

The latest ones (Schrades) have not fared as well, but they are examples. I think those are it except the related EC Simmons and Waldens , which Sanders Norvell worked for learning the trade.

Yesterday morning, this pocket knife arrived in a group or lot of pocket knives that I purchased. It now becomes my latest example to be posted under this topic or thread. I did NOT purchase the group or lot of pocket knives to obtain this particular pocket knife. However, it definitely turned out to be a keeper. It will be a welcomed addition to my general, pocket knife accumulation. It is a GRIFFON XX, two blades, three tang stamps, 3" closed, one spring, all metal, pocket knife. The main blade front tang stamp says, "griffon (written, underlined) xx (over) B' PORT. CT." The main blade back tang stamp is the image of a "Griffon." The secondary blade front tang stamp says, "griffon (written, underlined) xx (over) B' PORT. CT." The main handle side says "1916" and has the image of a buffalo head wearing a fez. The other handle side says, "Ismailia (symbol or logo) Patrol - A.A.O. N.M.S." (Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine) The following is NOT my description....."This early shrine pocket knife was made for the 42nd Imperial Council in Buffalo, New York on July 11, 1916. New York is the home of the Ismailia Shrine Temple hence the buffalo is wearing a fez on the handle." The main blade has a soft half stop, a NASTY opening snap and a NASTY closing snap. The secondary blade has no half stop, no opening snap and no closing snap. Overall, this pocket knife is in VERY GOOD condition. I gave it a VERY minor cleaning. I took some pictures and here it is.

A old New York Knife, Hammer Brand.
Based on the Hammer Brand stamp, 4 fingers it's probably pre 1930's? IDK, anyone else have an idea.
Acquired from my father in law, who was not a collector, and it does not look like he carried it. He carried a Swiss Army logo knife and a Northfield UN-X-LD that I gave him a few years ago.
