Greg, not only does that Scout knife with the 1st Class shield have a saber grind on both sides of the main, it's also a long line that's saber ground on both sides. I think that's odd.

Yes I'm pretty sure that scout is just like the the one you showed me with the long line. They may have occupied the same delivery box when new.

A rare scout knife indeed Jerry .
I've had several, even a mint in the original box specimen with brown paper wrapping , which came in a Boy Scouts of America box .

That sabre grind on both sides really makes a difference, Greg. Very nice pick up!
The Roger's bone on those two scout whittlers are awesome!
I'd go after that one if I were you. It never hurts to ask!

I have two of the early scout knives.One with the etch one without.The bottom picture is a scout no model number and no shield.

Wouldn't mind one of the scout models myself. Just picked up a later model delrin handled 72 to go with the 2 bone handled I already had.

Speaking of sabre-ground 72s, I finally had a chance to get a full-sunlight photo set of the 1st-gen I mentioned the other day/week/???.
I took a close look with a small portable microscope and confirmed that both handles are bone, about the same age, and likely factory. I'm no expert, but I think this has Rogers bone on both sides, further giving credence to the likelihood that this one left Camillus as you see it now, more or less, with just more "blackened" mark side bone. I see no evidence the knife was ever repinned, worked, or otherwise tampered with. In my totally inexpert opinion, she's legit.
Now, here are the pics so you can try and judge for yourselves:
This knife is taking up an honored place in my collection.

This knife is taking up an honored place in my collection.
Tony I have one that has that dark bone on both sides. I guess they just reached in the bin and installed whatever they pulled out. That one is a looker.

I looked around the house and found a few more Camillus #72, so now i have 14. However not even one has a double saber grind and only 1 or maybe 2 have bone handles, plus many have been used, so a rather low end 72 collection. Now i will focus on bone examples.
Of the 3 with yellow Delrin only one is marked "72" on back master tang. Any significance to "72" not being there ?

Rex, love those two 72s with Rogers bone.
The one on the left looks like it's a 1st G. The middle one looks like it might be a 2nd G. The Rogers bone on that one is especially nice. Nice new addition too.
Tony, I think you're right on the Rogers bone. It's just a darker scale than the other. Camillus wasn't very particular sometimes about matching its covers. The knife I bought from Harold (stockman) also has handle covers that don't match. The front one has an olive greenish color and the back is a reddish brown. Both are nice Rogers bone but as for them matching
Glad the mystery is finally solved. You got yourself a winner there, buddy!
KJ, I only see one in bone. The top left one but it would not be unheard of if I were wrong.

That's miles from low-end, kj.
I think later Camillus offerings were manufactured on a knife-edge budget (if you'll pardon the pun). The blades from that era have so many variations due to changes or omissions of convenience -- or budget -- that a missing 72 stamp seems positively ordinary in retrospect. You have some interesting varieties there in pull stamping and placement and a nice solid collection of 72s overall. Thanks for sharing them!

It appears that Tony is on to something. The 1047 Scout version of the 72 never had a pattern stamp on the pile side of the main blade, soooo I feel reasonably certain those two 72s got 1047 main blades installed. I have an example with a Stanley SL6 main blade so my theory is not unreasonable.

This boy scout with double side sabre ground master came today and I was pleasantly surprised. It looks better than the sellers pictures and with a little 3in1 and some flitz is a pretty doggone good knife.
