This one arrived today. A Colonial military knife. It's a beast at 6" closed. Case Peanut for comparison.

Bruno excellent acquisition of the Colonial pilot's knife. I've been trying to get one of those for ages.

I looked at one of those a few years ago and the old feller had a pretty hefty price on it. I can't recall but there was something wrong with the saw blade. I think it went down in the well too deep or somethin' Probably should have picked it up, it was much of a knife. Were they made by several different companies or was Colonial the single mfg.?

Those are GREAT BIG KNIVES!! I bought one a while back with the saw blade broken off and Elvis removed the broken blade and put it back together as a single blade knife, keeping the liner lock, did a Grrrrrr8 job on it. They were also made by United, Grand Rapids, Michigan but, from what I've read, the Colonial is the best of the two. I've been looking for another Colonial for myself. Nice catch

Thanks. I had one and sold it. Always regretted selling it it so when I saw this one on ebay, I bid on it. A vague description allowed me to get it for less that it's actually worth.

The saw blade does sit low in the well but the blade protrudes out the end so you can lift it. See the attached pic. If the blade were to snap in half, you'd never be able to open it with your finger nail.

Silvey's book actually lists three variations of this knife:

Well, maybe I let a good one slide by, thinking it was defective as I couldn't open the saw blade like the clip blade. Live and learn, maybe there will be a next time. One of the great things about AAPK, there's always something to learn, now if I could just retain most of it.

These old Colonials clean up real nice. Here is one that did a couple of years ago. I replaced the blade and made an easy opener out of it. Put some fine walnut on it. I gave it to a Boy Scout leader that I used to know. I have another one to do when I get the chance!

I couldn't leave this very nice stockman sit for $8 at the flea market. Never used. Four inches closed. White plastic covers.

Even with the White plastic covers, its a good looking knife. It looks very clean with the white. I like it.

I just got this today and even though it's missing a couple of it's blades I loved the look of it with the one blade and it's my first Joseph Rodgers. Can anyone help me with telling the age of this old warrior. I don't know anything about metallurgy but based on the type of pitting and corrosion on the back springs it looks to have a high amount of iron in it which usually indicates knives from the mid 1800's to early 1900's. Also the bolster are aluminum because they are non-magnetic.
