Roland those knives are beautiful and that tang stamp photo you posted is simply stellar.

Thank you Phil. I enjoy collecting these older German pen knives. By "older" i mean definitely before WW II and going back to 1890's. There are quite a few still around in very good condition.

What is the length of your #45 Queen? According to a chart that bdev provided, the 45 is listed as a "Big Chief", it is 5 inches closed. Do you have any idea what the M on the blade indicates? I've got 2 #45s but they are kinda' ragged compared to the nice one you posted.

Edit: searched around and found a Queen #45M would be a smaller version of the 5" Big Chief, there apparently were several variations of the #45.

Farmer it 3.5 inches this is a real nice one, Tony this one came off the bay, it was $28.99 bin with free shipping, it was real nice looking so I bit, although a litte more than this ole tightwad wanted to spend. Matter of fact it was a few more dollars more than I gave for my big chief. I'm happy, now I need to find a easy open at a good price.

Nice pick-up. I saw that one on ebay but let it go.

Just received this Colonial stockman. I usually don't buy Colonials but this one spoke to me. It's a nice clean example.

You're right, bdev, it is a nice clean knife.

I have a few Colonials. Nice and clean like this one, so I quit buying them.

It didn't take long, I found I needed one to put in my EDC rotation. Just got my 2nd GEC "White Micarta Tidioute #13 Whip" in the mail yesterday. Seller had it marked lightly used so its a good one to carry.

Just got the annual BFC Traditional forum's knife, a GEC #15 Barlow with a 1095 sheepsfoot blade with natural canvas micarta scales.

Boy oh boy! Y'all's mail men have been mighty good to you. Some mighty nice lookin' knives!

I couldn't leave this very nice stockman sit for $8 at the flea market. Never used. Four inches closed. White plastic covers.

J1890, Thanks for not getting it ahead of me. Pocket knives of this size I typically use for lite duties; opening mail or packages, etc. These it will of course handle just fine. For larger/tougher jobs I use larger knives. I mention this because I can't provide you with a more serious test of its cutting ability.

One thing that immediately struck me was that it was unusually comfortable in the hand. What contributes to this is that the blackened portion of the scales have striations, or very lightfine lines running from top to bottom. If you expand the first photo you should be able to see them at the rear of the handle, just behind the e/o cutaway. I haven't encountered this before but, for me, it provides a very nice tactile feel.

That is the time-honored "saw-cut" surface. Many barlows had it over the decades, and Schrade, with their Old Timer Line in molded Delrin, made it famous.

tongueriver: You are, of course, totally correct. In fact, I have a number of saw cuts. What diverted my attention was the texture of the Queen scales. Different knives have different textures and the Queen has the Goldilocks feel,i.e. just right for me. The first photo is a granddaddy Barlow from Russell [Green River Works]. Next photo down is the Queen. I think you can see the fineness of the cuts. Last is a Schrade/OldTimer

Whoa baby. Lookee here what I received in today's mail. ~Q~ was/is letting go some of his pile and I was lucky enough to get this Kershaw 7000BB Automatic. What a knife. I have a handful of automatics but not one of them fires as hard as this one. Nearly jumps out of your hand. She's a real beauty and I'm pleased to have her. Thank you immensely ~Q~.

Joe, you should post that one in the pocket wear thread. I'm surprised to see it crack free on both sides of the shield. That's unusual for those white Delrin ones. Good find. Those don't come up very often.

Nice 1047 Scout Scott. How's the snap on all blades? It's post 1976 when they discontinued pinning the handles and went to the post method of mounting them. It's before they started using the Italic tang stamp but who knows when that was. Very late '70s - sometime in the '80s??

Too late now sucka. You're hooked and don't even realize it yet.
