All About Pocket Knives

Awesome work! I love to work with wood, but I don't always have a lot of free time for projects, so that why I work on knives as my focus.

I got the planes situated and the dividers as well as the cleats cut and attached today. I installed the dividers with a brad nailer, and the cleats are screwed in so that I can easily re-arrange things later if I want to. I was going right to left, starting with the big No. 8 plane. As I slowly neared the left side, I could see that I was going to have an awkward-sized narrow gap on the left side. I didn't do any math to figure out the spacing because - you know - that would require mathing.

Then I remembered my little bitty Stanley No. 75. A little bull-nosed rabbet plane - and a handy little bugger. Wouldn't ya know - it fit right into the awkward little gap and made it look like I planned it all along.

And I have already outgrown this till. I have a handful of planes that will have to sit on the shelf - if they will fit. I hope I don't pull my wall down with this load of cast iron hanging off it!

I got the drawers knocked out today. Generated a few wood shavings getting the boards down to proper thickness. I ordered some Waterlox to finish it with - but it won't be here until next Friday, so I am done with it for the rest of the week. Maybe some sanding and I need to turn some drawer pulls.

Was going to ask you what was the wood creating the dark shavings but reread and realized you said it was walnut.

Thanks TF. I am a rank amateur and make a lot of mistakes. But I get a lot of satisfaction out of the process and am getting a little better with each project. I read where everybody makes mistakes when woodworking, but as your skill level increases, you get better at hiding the mistakes.

I haven't worked on the plane till in a few days, but I got the drawer pulls turned today. Made them out of Chittam wood. I trimmed up some branches in my back yard a year or so ago, and this has been laying around the shop drying out.

My finish (Waterlox) is supposed to be here tomorrow, so I can finally wrap this project up, hopefully.

This is nothing compared to the other builds in this thread but I do what I can with what I have.

Built a bird feeder for my father in law yesterday. The post, wood, tin roofing, everything except for the screws is "upcycling" materials so it only cost me my time. We were invited over for a cookout at his house yesterday evening so I got it mounted and ready for use yesterday too.

The window you see is their kitchen window so they like to watch the birds from that window. In the feeder they had, witch was also one of my builds, they have spotted a Raccoon sitting in it from time to time so I told him I built him a new coon feeder.

On a side note, raccoons are not a native species over here. They were brought in to be farmed for fur and some of them escaped. I guess that was back in the 60's or 70's but they are popping up all over the place now. I think they made it to our area about 10 years or so ago. I keep seeing more and more of them around here. Seems like you see more of them with each passing year.

Wolves are making a come back in Germany so the Raccoons will be another good meal for them I guess.

Nice work Tom. Simple and smart solution to putting the “pitch” on the roof. The top reminds me of the canopy of an old steam traction engine.

I finally got several coats of Waterlox finish on the plane till and got it mounted on the wall and loaded up. I managed to get all of my planes in it / on it. Even saved a slot for a No. 6, which I don't have yet.

A couple of small projects - made a chisel rack out of some left-over walnut from the plane till.

I also had this old socket handle framing chisel I bought at an estate sale last year. It had a nub of a broken handle in it. I cleaned it up and sharpened it and intended to turn a handle for it - but then forgot about it. I dug an ash log out of my pile, and after jointing, planeing, sawing, and turning it to get past all the cracks, checks, and borer beetles, I was able to salvage a piece big enough for a handle. I can't find a makers mark on the chisel. It appears to have been broken at the neck and welded together again, and is over a foot long when assembled. It's a rough, tough old thing, but it sure takes a keen edge, like a razor.

Beautiful looking shop Mike! What a wonderful place to hang out and be creative. Nice work on your projects and the whole shop as well.

The chisel rack and the framing chisel came out very nice. The all-wood mallet really speaks to me, and it looks to be a handy little thing. Quite a lot to like amongst those photos, and I wish I had such a skill!

Thanks guys. I have been collecting / acquiring tools since I was around 13 - or almost 50 years. I am loving retirement and am finally - slowly - getting the shop set up like I like. I spend most every day out there "puttering around".

My daughter finally came and picked up the little corner shelf we made together a few weeks ago, and put a stain and finish on it. She is very happy with it.
