Mike, that is a great set, thanks for showing it. The box is in good shape as well.
It never ceases to cause my mind to wander whenever I see something like this......I think of when it was purchased and put to use, just shortly after the Civil War, homes weren't yet electrified etc etc. Amazing to think about, and the owners saved the box, a piece of cardboard surviving 150 years later! Thanks for a great post.

Thanks Ike, I've had similar thoughts. Got the set in an antique shop about 20 years ago. Amazing it lasted this long.

That boxed carving set probably sat in a drawer of a sideboard or buffet or china cabinet for the majority of its existence.

It was used very little, if at all, cleaned and returned, in its box, to the drawer.

I suspect evening meals in the 19th and early 20th centuries required carving more often than now, but still, properly cleaned, dried and put away, sets like this one survived.

I once owned a half dozen different Robeson sets from the 1950's. Still have one that I use once or twice a year. Every set I ever bought was in unused, mint condition in their original boxes, some more substantial and elaborate than others.

I think people were gifted the sets as wedding or Christmas gifts, were put in a drawer and never used, then sold by their children as part of an estate liquidation.

My own parents had a Wearever carving set they got with a set of pots and pans in the 1940's. To my knowledge, it was never used.

Great old carving set, Mike! Very nice Remington and box, espn77, I really like peanuts with a sabre ground clip blade! Good pickup on the Imperial and box, Lee! You probably noticed, but Wayne posted a very similar knife and box on the previous page (no blade etch on his).

Thanks Dan .... and thanks for pointing out Wayne’s on previous page as I forgot ... well that makes 2 of those boxes I’ve seen ... I can’t tell if Wayne’s toothpick has the etch and flask shield ... They sure made alot of those knives ... ...

I have this Keen Kutter cutlery set. It was gifted to me by Charlie Campagna (upnorth) back in 2016, after my first trip to the OKCA show in Eugene.

You seldom find KK boxes with the cutlery intact. Nice gift.

Here are some Official Scout items with the original boxes. Note the prices on the utensil sets are less than $2 retail. These are getting harder to find with the boxes.

I just picked up this schrade walden box for the 3'' 974 congress pattern. I just so happened to already have two examples of said pattern.

Keith, I've been meaning to get some old schrade boxes for a while now. They are not real hard to find. I think from now on I'll be picking up any good ones I see if the price is right.

I don’t know how you all can collect have such eclectic collections. I have trouble collecting the elusive FJ’s. Although, I would love to have a FJ box.

Finally found an American Shear & Knife Co to go with the box I got several months ago.It's 2 3/4" long and dates about 1870-1914.I found on ebay and thought it was a wood handled knife,after closer inspection I believe it's horn handles.
