Now here's an odd one. A serpentine, candle-ended, tip bolstered, divided back-springs, bone handled whittler by The Robeson Cutlery Company.

This is not my knife, but it is currently for sale on Ebay.

Has anyone ever seen a similar knife by any other manufacturer?

Pattern number on this is 632273. 3" long closed.

Strange stuff. Not a whittlin' knife, but made in the "whittler" way.

Bernard Levine did not mention nor illustrate such a knife in his books.

I have handled alot of knives over the last 40 years but nothing like this lock back whittler. According to the records this was from a store in Montana in the early 1900's and I always wondered if it was English.

That is a terrific knife! Looks like it would just fit the hand so well. Very, very cool.

This thread is an excellent resource to study the whittler pattern. There is a rich variety of manufacturers and styles.

Here is a cleaned Case Tested XX 6376 1/2. It is unusual (to me at least) because all of the blades are stamped plus it has the pattern number stamped. I would love to hear opinions about the stamping. One man's "unusual" could be another man's "suspicious"

It is a constant struggle for me to understand when my camera will flash and when it won't.

Ralph who know what some guy did to the knife when he was putting it together, which was 75 + years ago. I've seen all the Blades stamp before, but something about the knife makes me wonder. Someone else will have to answer your question. I do like the knife.

Jerry, I've seen all the blades stamped on Case Tested knives before. It's not that unusual. The shield on yours looks right for the Tested era. However I think the pattern number being stamped on one is unusual. But that's not to say it never happened. Nice looking knife in any case (pun intended).

Hey Jerry. Fine knife you have there. First one I have personally seen. I would say all 3 blades stamped in neither common or uncommon. The pattern stamp will be found on very early TESTED knives. I ahve one or 2 myself.
Your pics cannot be enlarged also so it is hard to tell but is there a ""XX" stamped directly above the pattern number? If so, mine is like that also.
The other thing that makes me think early TESTED is the pen blade tang shape. Pre TESTED era knives had that arched type tang shape. Look at it and compare to the other blades on the knife as it is hard to describe. Not uncommomn for one blade to have it and the others not. I have mainly seen this on secondary blades.

This one probably belongs under the rare tang stamps thread also, but I decided to put it here. Marked Washington Cutlery Co. Milwaukee. Split backspring whittler with stag handles. All blades are stamped. Pile side on master blade stamped with "V". Goins says this company ceased making knives in early 1900s. Only example I've ever seen.

Tommy, it's a plastic of some sort. Notice the chunk out at the swell center. That happened a long time ago.
