I think that shield is just a fancier version of a glimp shield.
I may be wrong, but it is a fancy version of what Stewart and Richie call a glimp.






Here is a fairly rare one I would think, THORNTON. U.S.A.
Goins’ says it is a brand name used by Federal Knife Co, c. 1944-1948/49. Goins’ also says Federal was started my 2 former Colonial employees, which may explain why it is a variation of a shell type handle. Apparently it was a short lived company.

I posted this one today on the General Discussion forum but thought it might be good here as well.

An unmarked(at least as far as I can tell)picture handle knife with three blades AND three backsprings.The blades are spear master blade;screwdriver/cap lifter and punch secondary blades. The inscription under the scales is as follows:

I.T.E. Circuit Breaker Co. Nineteenth and Hamilton Sts. Philadelphia Pa. on one side.

" The next time a fuse blows... get a U-RE-Lite Made in USA Made for Every kind of Service"

A quick research turned up the term Urelite as being:
1) A type of plastic used on guitars.
2) A meteorite material.
3) A type of LX circuit breaker;whatever LX is.

Anyway I thought it was a unique pattern even though it isn't in the best of shape;and the price was right:$6.50.

Here is an old Holley knife.......well used and a little rough but still has some pretty bone handles. Stamp is "Holley Mfg. Co. Lakeville". She`s 3.25 inches long with blades closed and has one blade broke off . You just dont see these everyday. Dont know if you can see the pretty fileworked liners from these photos or not.

Here's one I dug out recently:A Joseph Rodgers fisherman's knife marked,"Abercrombie & Fitch" with checkered horn scales;a sheepfoot master blade with scissors;corkscrew;folding scale w/hook for weighing catch;and 2 implements in the scales(a hook disgorger & tweezers).My first Rodgers knife acquired about 1972.

Gtandpa Joel, 1872 - 1942 I didn't get to know him well but he was my hero. Gram gave me this in about 1953 with the admonition to keep it in the family. Not sure of it's birthday but it was sureley before I was born and I am 70+

As a grandpa to grandson heirloom, that's right up there with Willie's Case Tested XX slot knife.

My grandfather and namesake was a lifelong master machinist, but he owned the crappiest knives ever made. He must not have known that I would one day be keenly interested in such, or he would have bought better cutlery.
