All About Pocket Knives

Here is my favorite SAK.... I use it when skinning deer. The long skinning blade laying back at an angle has a rounded and blunt end so when you slice under the skin it will cut skin but not into the meat.

Well...she rolls quite nicely as a matter of fact! Extremely useful knife/tool.

I actually used it to execute a complete repair on the toilet paper hanger the other day without ever getting up off the pot! We have a hard plastic toilet paper roller attached to the wall right next to the toilet, and one of the two screws that secure it to the wall had come loose...so I pulled out the trusty Pioneer from my rfp, used the small screwdriver tip to remove the screw...flipped out the punch and worked a new hole through the plastic right next to the old hole, switched back to the screwdriver tip and worked that screw through the new hole and securely into the wall behind it. Finished my business, and away I went.

Truly a man of many talents! Way to work things out Mike! As some would say...your a super dooper pooper!

Those SAK's are stainless, should.t hurt it it falls in the water. Asfor the other it is washable with soap and water. ftd

I have picked up 3 recently. First pic is of two Swiss Bianco models. The Davy's Gray Farmer and Micro Farmer, which is a 83mm Cadet with a saw blade. The other is an Orange Farmer that Victorinox made a limited run for a South African dealer. It will be for sale as I have 2 others.

Great pick ups Tank! I've never even heard of a "micro-farmer" before, pretty sweet!
...and that orange Farmer is a real beauty too. I still need to add a Farmer to my accumulation, but am not a huge fan of the silver alox...that orange would be my first choice of colors actually!

I have a stupid question:
I have 4 SAK's that are all labeled as "OFFICIER". They all 4 have a different (with some similarities) blades or tools. One of my OFFICIERs even has almost twice as many blades/tools as the other 3. Some OFFICIERs have the magnifying glass and some don't.

Now the question, What characteristics make an OFFICIER or a HUNTSMAN or a CHAMPION or any other SAK assume a given name?

In 1897 Victorinox put a so called Officers knife to the market. Soon enough pocket knives coming from Switzerland were known as "Officers knives". Several different knives were officially issued to the members of the swiss army. The last change was in 2008 to this variant:

To make a long story short: Every Wenger or Victorinox is an Officers knife!

Well, I guess where I am missing the over-all picture is this:
Why are some marked "OFFICIER" and then others are not? Is this a year model issue?

SO.... in actuality... there is no model specifically called "OFFICIER".

In my collection, the knives on the right are marked "OFFICIER" but the ones on the left are not.
It seems the number of blades and the type of blades or tools is going to designate the model of the SAK.
I think the light is starting to come on.

There are two types of Swiss Army Knives, the Soldier's Knife and the Officer's Knife. The Soldier's knife is standard issue for Switzerland and Germany's military. The Officer's version boasts a wide variety of features, including the iconic corkscrew. According the Victorinox publication "Swiss Army Knives: A Collector's Companion," the generic term "Swiss Army Knife" was created just after World War II by American servicemen, who found its official German name "Offiziersmesser" too hard to say.

Following WWII the PX retailers started marketing the "Swiss Officer's Knife" in big amounts to be able to National soldiers. The actual troopers Started calling it the Swiss Army Knife intended for small and also the label features stuck.
In this photo the Officer knives are on top and the real Soldier issued are on bottom.
