LOL, I love it!

No new posts here in quite some time.

Here is an unusual little novelty knife. It is marked IXL and could have been made by Wostenholm, the handle is ivory and the blade and sheath are etched.

MB, Where do you find this stuff? That is just too sweet.

I am with Charlie; where do you find such different knives?

A few pages back, someone posted a 'trick' knife. I'm not sure if my knife requires the same trick, but here's mine, from Germany. It has a sliding ball bearing inside that locks the knife when you close the blade and press lightly on it, then tip the knife. To open you press the (closed) blade slightly and tip the knife the other way, the ball rolls out, and you can open the blade. It took me a while to figure this one out but the flea-market guy I bought it off of didn't know how to open it either, so I got it for $1.

The other one is a novelty knife similar to Gino's. The design of this knife is very interesting and I wonder what it would be like if it were made of quality materials. cheers

I found these two at a local collector's show this weekend. First is a folding scalpel with tortoise shell handles. I know I have seen a couple of these posted somewhere on this site but couldn't find them. Next three pics are of a Swedish barrel knife.

Dan, it is not a scalpel, it is a specialized folding pocket instrument. The two blades are a Syme`s Abscess & Paget`s Tenotomy knives

Thanks MB, I will take your word for it on what the blades are but I really don't even want to think about what a doctor might have used them for.

I hear you Dan;I have a small collection of medical instruments and when I found out their uses it made my skin crawl! I'll spare you the details.

The so-called "Gum Lancet" actually makes the skin around my mouth quiver, especially since they were most likely used without local anesthesia.

The intended use of these instruments does not bother me at all, in fact I have dental drilling work done all the time without any type of anesthesia.

The thing that gets me about these instruments back then was the fact they were not properly sterilized, like they would do today, that is the reason they stopped making them with Tortoise shell handles and started using all metal handles. The sad part about using these old instruments back in the day was, you would probably die from the infection they caused and not the disease you were being operated on in the first place

Yes, built just like a conventional size pocket knife, the blades even snap open and closed!


Finding giant display knives is my latest fetish in the world of knife collecting

Used to see a lot of HUGE Schrade Oldtimers on ebay, Chinese of course, but not so much any more.

WOW MB! That is in fantastic shape, what a great find. I wish I could feel the heft of it!
