I had the camera out yesterday and thought I should post a few more boxes. Some of these came via my good friend Galvanic1882. I included some razor boxes as they tell a story as well. See what you think.

I am glad to post this box but I dod not own it but thought it should be shown in case anyone missed it on ebay. The auction ended last night and it sold for 305.00 I was looking to bid but was not prepared to go that high if I got a chance. This is a RARE one indeed. I know that LT was looking at it and hope he got it.

Any one have a knife to go with that box? You guys out east are tearing me up.

I don't but wish I did. LT has 2 or 3 though!!!

This Waterville box has the inked stamp applied directly to the box rather than a seperate label.

yes they are

I recently acquired two very rear Schatt & Morgan Cutlery Titusville boxes. Those are the first two shown. The third box has with the most recognized label but on a rear red box also from Titusville. The last box is a S&M box but labeled as New York Cutlery, their name when the factory was in Gowanda, NY.

Now those are special.

Just a clarification. I own a similar box as the one you identified as being from Gowanda NY period. I know they were original from NYC. Is it not possible that the boxes were from that period and Gowanda? or did they have no manufacturing with there name at that time. I am not sure if I am stating that correctly. I just want to be sure that mine is from Gowanda timeframe and not earlier. Any help?

If I understand your question correctly, to my knowledge S&M operated as the New York Cutlery Company when they were in New York City as importers and in Gowanda as manufacturers. When they moved the manufacturing to Titusville they incorporated as the Schatt & Morgan Cutlery Company and changed the name of the company from New York Cutlery Co. to Schatt & Morgan. They created the recognizable SXM trademark while in Gowanda and continued it in Titusville and even today. Queen owns the S&M trademark today.

Quoting from Dr. David Krauss’ narrative, posted here on AAPK he notes: “John W. Schatt and Charles B. Morgan established the Schatt & Morgan Cutlery Company in 1895. Initially founded as the “New York Cutlery Company” (not to be confused with the well known New York Knife Company) the pair opened an office in New York City sometime in 1896. Some time in 1896 or early in 1897 they moved to Schatt’s hometown of Gowanda New York, and in July of 1897 they purchased the Platts’ cutlery plant there. (The Platts family then moved to Eldred Pennsylvania and on to various associations with the extended Case family.) The company was housed in Gowanda from 1897 until 1902 at which time they moved to the Titusville, Pennsylvania factory where they incorporated. Schatt & Morgan went bankrupt in the late 1920’s, and was sold to Queen City Cutlery in August of 1933 at a sheriff’s auction.”

So far I have found three Gowanda stamping shown below, also as well as a billhead used in Gowanda.

When the company was in NY as importers they used three stampings (found thus far), two for razors and one on pocket cutlery. I am showing them below also.

Thank you David, That was very helpful. So being that my box has S&M New York on it, it has to be from the Gowanda period! That explains it. I have a nice OLD box as well.

That last S & M tang stamp with the curves is interesting. I haven't seen that before. You have some fabulous stuff! I love looking things from your collection.
