All About Pocket Knives

Decided to treat myself to a knife for July 4th. Perfect timing from the mail man. This is a Bear & Sons Barlow, their Kodiak model, with a flag etch on the blade with the words Old Glory.

Knice hauls fellas!!!

Mailman musta hated toting these to my front door....even though it's only about 8 yards...

Mail Call and I'm really liking this piece. Came from France so I've been waiting a few days. I do like dog groomers and have never seen one with this stamp, actually I've never seen the stamp.

That's a beauty outcast. I take a liking to the dog groomers as well. Only have two but two of my favorites.

EDIT - I think I just found the pattern number: 242(3) anywhere from 1946 to 1950. What say ye?

You are correct, it's an early walden 242 as indicated by the stamp on both blades. I have one like it, nice knife.

Jerry - it is definitely bone

I received Tuesday and was surprised at one how good of a condition it is in and two how small it is. For some reason I was thinking it would be the size of a standard cigar jack but reminds me more of a physician's knife. Awesome snap, fit, and finish. Half stop on the pen blade. Springs are flush open and closed. Another early Schrade for the collection.

I'll have some time over the weekend to post picks.

Picked this one up today. Some of the sickest color bone I have seen on a CASE.

It has a high pull, but has a model stamp. Go figure. It is a second cut knife. I think second cut stag but either way, second cut, as the color varied due to bone or stag density. The second cut Stags had no "character" so they are jigged similar to bone. She is in my pocket as I write this. There she will stay.

Along with my other Hunter EDCs for comparison. Lower knife in the multi knife knife pic is in Steve's 2nd book page 207. Same exact knife pictured not a similar one.

Blades and frames may look short in the pics but they are not. Just the pic angle.

Couple of mail calls this week. Ganzo G7531-CF and Firebird F7513-CF both these are really nice knives out the box and the price is pretty good also. These would have to be my best bang for your buck right now.

Added to my scout drawer this week.

It's a 2003 SFO for Smokey Mt. Knife Works. That year they did a Scout and Marlin Spike with yellow delrin. They're pretty had to find now.

Must be a yellow Case knife kind of day! Got these two in the mail! as well this Case tooth pick Bomb from Mike (XXCASEXX) A nice day indeed! Love that Scout Wazu!

Here are two I received today.
A Queen #10 circa 1961. No tang stamp and the blade etch is long gone. Rogers bone.

The other is a new S&M 376 Swell Center. Spear and Wharncliffe and a factory second EDC. I bought it to carry so no problem.
There is a defect in the bone at the center pin. Not really that bad. Take a look at the pic of the springs. A bit uneven but functions fine. The Wharncliffe has a much lighter pull than the spear. OK....It is a factory second so I'll give it a pass. On the plus side. It's sharp!

Bought this in a junk store, no sheath.
I think handles are horn. On the road so no tape measure.

Nice.

Spread your hand, measure thumb tip to pinky tip. Mine's just a tad over but close enough I call it 9". Not exactly accurate, but has come in handy if a tape or ruler isn't right nearby.

I especially like your Queen; I am not familiar with the dating on them. I looked up an article by Bernard Levine on Rogers Bone (1987) (and yours is clearly Rogers Bone), and he says: "Rogers Mfg. Co. last sold bone pocketknife handle material in 1962. The firm still supplies limited quantities of synthetic handle material to the cutlery industry, but domestic and foreign competitors have taken most of that specialized business away. Addendum by myself: One source says the bone operation was destroyed by fire in 1956."

I'm guessing about the 1961 date based on the fact that Queen started to not stamp their tangs starting in 1961. Since Rogers bone was stopped around 1962, this knife was probably made circa 1961-62. It could have been made later since Queen might have had enough stock to continue production until all the bone was used up. To the best of my knowledge, they did not catalog Rogers bone during the early 1960's.

I just can't help myself,, I gotta show this one off a little. I just find this to be an artful approach to the utility of a bartender knife with some creative advertising to go with it.
Besides being a bartender pattern, there is a Stanhope viewer built in and the picture of old Augustus Busch is still viewable.
The company made knives from 1864 to 1928. Not really sure when this one came on the market but for all practical purposes I'm considering it to be 100 years old.

Oh,, I forgot to mention that it comes in its own soft leather pouch. The pouch has Anheuser Busch advertising on it. In all my years of messing with knives I have seen a few of the knives but I have never seen the pouch before.

Ray, your bartender knife is extraordinary! It didn't need the embellishments to be effective, but they sure add a lot to the knife IMO.
