wlf wrote: Mon Dec 23, 2024 4:38 pm My favorite bone on any knife I own is the Walden Handle Factory pick bone on this turn of the century NYK farmers jack. This was a short lived combined venture by Walden Knife, NYK, and Schrade. It's rare to see original pick bone that's not pocket worn, like this Ulster is , upon which those deeper gouges are still apparent.
Lyle I've got this old Wester Bros. New York easy open with a very similar cut to the bone. I believe they imported from Germany up until WWI started and then contracted with US companies thereafter. Sure does make a pretty knife handle. :D
Indeed it does.

I could be wrong, don't think your knife was German made Greg. It's stamped New York. Here's the article telling about the timelines and the handle factory;
https://www.thewaldenhouse.org/LHD%2020 ... dustry.pdf

Here's early Wester Bros German bone . The last( later) one is similar but not what we have. The dyes used on early bone didn't take too well , many became almost translucent, like this Southington that someone torched a little .

I don't think it's from Germany either. I'm sure itwas made by as US company on contract. I've got an Empire or two with that style of pick bone jigging too.

Thanks Tmks.

Greg that first one has what I call the W H F aka the "Stag Shop" pick bone handles.

The second has similar to the pre peachseed looking Ulster bone handles. The second unused is older and is not dyed as effectively, but not quite the extent of the previous Southington.

I did not say enough about this knife , I could look at it everyday . Clark , I'm not an easy open guy, but your knife is one of the finest knives I've seen . That bone. Do you think this handle material came from the Walden Handle Factory (aka Stag Shop)?

I suppose this fella would have looked similar at it's beginning.

gsmith and wlf, wow guys, I am drooling all over myself. You both just exemplified what I loooooove about this thread. Every one is beautiful, unique, and enlightening. Don't see that kind every day and can't thank you enough for sharing so we can all admire and take pleasure in viewing part of your amazing collections.
