All About Pocket Knives

Well i am on a roll. Another seller just accepted my offer of $60 for 2 Camillus # 72 knives both with half saber grind. Pictures below, i think for this condition $30 per knife is a pretty good deal.
Regarding my purchase earlier today of 72 with a shield: i'll post a pic below of backside of knife. Could be very good jigged Delrin or could be bone.Although i did optimistically say "is bone" in my earlier post, I purchased it with the thought 'could be bone', not 'is bone'. When i get the knife i will post a better pic to show what the material is.

Since we are on the subject of 72's, I don't believe I have shown my latest in this thread. A bone handled short line 2nd gen.

Greg, that bone knife is an absolute knockout. I'm currently on the hunt for a similar 2nd-gen bone knife so I can maybe whip up a little display.

KJ, as another recent convert to the ways of the #72, welcome to the addiction... It has a way of getting a hold on you, but you seem to be better-equipped to deal with that than most of us!

The brown knife with the federal shield is dollars-to-donuts composition-handled. It looks like it might be dyed bone from afar but I think you'll recognize that famous Camillus brownstag "jigged" synthetic when you get it.

I see you've also gotten one of the newer glued-scales versions (pre-tilted font stamp), so you seem to be following the exact path I did (got a Boy Scout 1047 whittler yet? ). I predict you'll have a short line first-gen on the way within the month. Also got a minty example of that "pinless" orangish-red Delrin 72 (slanted stamp) en route along with just a mess of Schrades and some other stuff.

I've got a package from the USPS here with a first-gen inside. I've been a little busy and am now trying to relax with dinner, so I will open it later. The light may not be conducive to good photos but I will closely inspect the handles we were all wondering about and report on the knife when I have a moment. I've been buzzing with anticipation all day.

Out of curiosity, did anyone end up sticking around to bid the Herman Williams red stag rehandled Schrade 863? When I saw the final bid for it I winced a little because I had room on it and just ran out of time to watch the auction before having to go do something. I had considered doing a max-bid before leaving but I was sure the thing was going to go for well over $100. I'm almost inclined to reach out to him and ask him to list another 863 at a high BIN price just so I can snap it up and offset what I feel was grand larceny for that stag knife. If one of my fellow AAPK hounds sniffed it out, however, good on you, you got a freaking steal.

Can't wait to see that much ballyhooed first gen Tony. Thanks for the comps on mine. We are collecting quite a following on these 72's and it's all Carmillus and Jerryd's fault. It's a Lotta fun though.

First off, Roland, all three are synthetic handles. Second the newer knife is post 1976 because that's when they stopped pinning the handles on and went to the "post" method of attaching the handles (picture later). Camillus didn't glue the handles on 72s or 1047s (Scout version of the 72).

I too expected Herman's knife to go for more. It cost me more to get one done than that knife went for.

I agree, it is a lot of fun. So the 4 i bought today all have synthetic handles. Now i will wait for a bone 72 as i now have about 10 with synthetic handles.

Nice pick ups there, KJ. I had seen the first photo on the bay for the longest time. At first sight it looked like bone but a closer look convinced me it wasn't. The pair of 72s I saw go up a few days ago and then ::poof:: they were gone. About your next venture for the bone 72 - If you're talking short lines then you are in for a long wait and good heap of friendly competition, especially if it's a 1st gen you're after. But if you're talking stag then there's a few out there ranging from $175 down to $95. and only one with a shield (boy scout) for $95. Good luck

Greg, That's a very handsome 2nd gen. Where do you find these hidden gems? The bone on that one looks green. I've often wondered if all short lines were made with Rogers bone? It sure is a special one, buddy, but floating on water special?

KJ, the darker synthetic handled one with the federal shield is my favorite of the second gen synthetics. Good looking knife.

I do see a pre 1946 swell center split spring whittler that looks pretty doggone spiffy though. $175 BIN.

Yeah I finally found it. It was listed as a Camillus 3 blade so my 72 search didn't pick it up. Did you see this 72 predicessor?

I missed that one. Thats a beautiful knife Greg! That pen was used enough that it became a wharncliff! Nice jigged bone scales too.

I saw the one Tommy mentioned late last night. Got it on my watch list. I asked questions this morning. I usually don't jump in on the bidding until the very end...if the water is still right and not boiling over. Good luck, fellas!

Greg, that whittler is a nice one but too rich for my blood. And the fact that it doesn't have a coping blade, well, it kind of kills the thrill for me. To me that little coping blade is the slickest little blade I've seen and makes the 72 all that more attractive.

Tommy I wanted to ask what you think of that pre WWII whittler the seller says it has the Sword Brand mark on the master but no stamps on the secondary blades and I don't know for sure but that Wharnecliffes may be correct for that knife. Do you have one of those?

..greg, I've got 5 of the split backspring whittlers, all but one have a pen and a clip secondary blades(no coping blades)(the other has 2 pen blades and no shield. one is a sword brand(mark side) and 4 line stamped(pile side and secondaries), the rest are 4 line stamped on all blades. are you as confused as i am yet???................ ................

Greg, there's a Camillus whittler like that one that sold for $40 here a couple of months back. The photos are still there but those two smaller blades are shot. Can't tell what type of blades they were originally but the stamps are there. Here's the main with the Sword Brand stamp

Focused, huh? Good idea. I have an old can of Foster's Lager from when I was in my early twenties. It's imported beer from Australia. They use to call it "the oil can" cause of its shape and colors. It became my piggy bank decades ago. Right now it's filled to the top with coins, no pennies. I'm using that for bidding on that 72 that popped up yesterday. It's focus time!
