With a saber ground clip, both sides, is the blade beside it always a pen ?

Yes Kj .

Edit: I take that back. Randy has two with the coping blade next to the double side master.

It's not mint but a great old knife that was gifted to me by my Marine brother, Jerryd! I've had it for several years and it truly lives up to the quote by TJ Murphy that Jerry has on his posts, "The #72 pattern has got to be pretty close to the perfect knife." This is one of those knives that gets very little pocket time but is admired and appreciated for what it is and even more, what it represents! Thank you again, Jerry! ::handshake::
If I read it right it is a 1st generation, short line, sabre grind both sides of the clip with beautiful perfect bone. 1946-50? If I'm not readin' her right, please set me straight. Hoping it's from that era, seein' how I'm a 1946 model. :)
Here's what I'm so proud of:

Treefarmer, That is one sweet looking 72. ::super_happy:: Yes, it's from that era, and if you're a 1946 model you'll be very happy to know that the 72 you have there with the beautiful Rogers bone is also a 1946 model. I'm very glad for, buddy. ::ds:: I am stunned that Jerry would have let go of a classic beauty like that. That is one top notch class act by Jerry. ::tu:: ::tu::

Those are a couple of very nice 72s, Jerry. I especially like the top one. That yellowish Rogers bone color is awesome!

Greg, you're a wealthy 1st G man. Those are some real nice ones. I see you got your freshly rehandled 72 with you now. Nice addition to the rest. ::tu:: ::tu::

Let me add an additional question to KJ's for the experts. Does the coping blade always have a half stop position or is it what ever blade is on that single end of the #72? ::shrug::

Phillip, judging by the ones that I have the half stop on the single end blade fell by the wayside with the second generation.

Yeah, the half stop is a rare duck. So rare that I didn't even remember it existing on a 72.

This one was stolen from my mailbox. That was almost two years ago and it still pisses me off and I got it for a song which adds insult to injury. Seller's picture.

Wow, Jerry. A real bummer. :x But I'm sure you know that's a 2nd gen. You're probably just so pissed when you posted we'll chalk it off to temporary blindness.

KJ, Not always. I just learned that last week. Go back one page and read (& see photos) on Randy's (#Goldpan) 2nd gens on either side of the 1st G. in the middle.

Thanks Greg and others for the First Gen. info.
This has so stimulated me that i just went to ebay and bought 2 Camillus # 72. One is bone and i think saber both sides, for $20, and a black synthetic ?? handle and maybe bilateral saber grinds for a big $25. Handles on this oldie show no shrinkage which to me = bone or Delrin which would make it after 1960. Pic below. Any thoughts on either knife always appreciated, no matter what they are.

Kj it is quite stimulating collecting these 72's due to the uncertainty of the time line of the short line and long line stamps plus they are still relatively inexpensive to acquire unless of course you run up on one in unused condition. The two that you have there, have the long line stamp which we think would indicate 50's and 60's although the black composite with no shield could be late 40's and the other I believe is what they called brownstag but I can't recall the timeline of it's introduction.

KJ, I could be wrong but I think both those 72s are made with synthetic handles. During that period Camillus made some 72s with synthetic handles that looked very much like bone.

Greg, you beat me to it again. :D ::tu::

Here's one for you. I have a couple with "Made In USA" tang stamps. The handles are black synthetic but do not appear to be that black shrinky dink crap they used during that era, at least they did not shrink. ::shrug:: They have a shield. They have the 1st Gen blade compliment and the two secondary blades both have half stops. On both knives, the main is saber ground on both sides and has a nail nick instead of a match strike pull. One knife has no snap on the main blade. Probably made by Camillus for Sears???????????

..........jerry, that's the first 2 I've ever seen with that shield besides the two I have!!!....one of mine is a first gen., and the other is a split-spring....both of mine are smooth caramel bone with gimped liners!!............. ::tu:: ::tu:: ...............

That's the first time I've seen that, Jerry. I love half stops. I'm not very knowledgeable with different knife brands. With that, I wonder why half stops weren't placed on all blades? I don't' recall ever see 'em on larger main blades. I have a 3 & 1/8" Schrade Cut Co MOP pen knife with two pen blades, one bigger than the other, both have half stops. I'd love to have a 1st gen. 72 with half stops on all three blades. That would be awesome.
