That is a really nice A. B. S. bare-head jack. How rare are such "framed" tang marks?

I don't think they're that rare.I suppose one could call a Keen Kutter a framed tang stamp,although it is a keystone design.

I saw those too Jimbo. This one is N.Y. Thanks O'.

Heres a new one I just snagged off Ebay....its a Keen-Blade....not to be confused with Keen kutter

This company went out of business in 1932, so these two are in pretty good shape considering their age.
This company should not be confused with Meriden Cutlery Co.

H M Meier (1854-1875) was a St Louis hardware and cutlery business, they first used the term "Chip-A-Way" which was later used by E C Simmons.

Thank you, Iman, Bill, and Harold. It photographed well, I made no refinements to the pics, and didnt oil it up beforehand, just a nice old knife.

Here is a brand I've never seen before, Pioneer Cutlery. The knife's quality looks to be about the same as an Ulster Knife Co. The only references I could find were some bankruptcy filings from 1924 and a one line entry in Goins' for 1926. The knife still snaps after a hundred years and the handles are crack free:

Goin's has 1926 Passaic NJ

Two great-looking wood-handled pocket knives, the H. M. Meier and Pioneer Cutlery. Each rises above conventionality given their handle shapes, the first of which I would identify as a SWELL- END jack, and the second, a BALOON jack. I love a good REGULAR jack, but extra effort went into making these two for aesthetic reasons alone.

Used to think my sheepsfoot jacks were hard to find but how about a spey blade jack, I've got spey barlows in the collection but this is the first jack I've seen or found.

Buffalo Cutlery Co which was the brand for Buffalo Wholesale Hardware Company in Buffalo NY. Goins states 1900 to 1920, they did not make knives and I've found information stating they had knives made in Germany and by Schrade Cut co, this one sure has what looks to be early Schrade pick bone. 3 5/8"with what appear to be full blades. It was badly rusted so I had to do a little more cleaning than I like.
