All About Pocket Knives

Nice knife, kj. It looks like stag to me, though it does resemble tusk with all the stress cracks on it. In the first picture you can see the end is smooth and has no pattern. If it were mammoth tusk you would see growth rings like on a tree. Plus whoever painted the deer on it probably did so because it is stag. Still a great buy at $35.

Dave, i think you are correct: polished stag. I have just come back from picking up this Brusletto 6" FB. I have not had anything with polished stag before so i don't know what it is 'supposed' to look like, but with a loupe this does not look like ivory.
It is a sweet little knife, nestles into my hand ready to cut with a shaving sharp true scandi grind, no edge grind. And a substantial sheath, all for $35. Yep, i am pleased with this little treasure. Although 'little' i could field dress a deer with it. Nice knife.

It's about 4" closed. I believe it was made by Utica. The tang stamp is worn, but I can see it says Utica, NY and above that I can see what I think are the remnants of Utica's "UTK Supreme" trademark.

Most polished stag I've seen looks similar to smooth bone. Blood flows into antlers, so they have pores like bone. Not my knife, but this Hen & Rooster helps illustrate what I mean. I have seen some polished stag with a few stress cracks, but never where it covered the whole handle like your knife. I think your knife with all those stress cracks looks a whole lot nicer than normal polished stag. You got yourself a sweet one there, kj!

I have a Dan Graves knife with a mammoth handle. He has friends in Alaska who find mammoth tusks in the melting tundra and send him pieces
The handle is just how the piece came out of the ground for size & shape and Dan polished all but the butt area. Prior to polishing it all looked like the butt and you can see it could be easy to overlook, looks just like another rock.

Can anyone confirm that the Sears Craftsman Barlow near the center is Schrade-built? I compared it to my Camilluses and it didn't match up.

I believe it is. I'm working on one right now that has the swinden construction, so I would say Schrade.

Hi all...Im new to the knife collecting and picked up a couple...nice ones in my opion and paid quite a bit for them...im needing someone with knowledge to maybe look at pics of them and estimate a value please. The top knife looks like the blades have wear and been buffed, but otherwise ok. Now the bottom knife doesn't look like a legitimate case tested to me. That's about all I can tell from the pictures, the experts will probably weigh in shortly.

Two nice Imperials from R.I. NOS and good quality.

The stag handled knife has a USA shield . I think it's a put together.

Bottom one looks like a Case/Bose Sowbelly, need better pics and shots of the tang stamp.

Got this in the mail today, a gift from a knife friend. 2007, GEC Tidoute Cutlery model 53 Cuban Cigar pattern with 1095 blades and buffalo horn scales.

The only true measure of a knife's value is the amount someone is willing to pay for it.
So, you already know the "value" of your knives because it's whatever you paid for them.
The only way to know what they're worth to someone else is to try to sell them.

Since you say that you are new to knife collecting, a word of advice: know what you are buying before shelling out the big bucks...as with any collectible item, there are a lot of forgers out there who are very eager to take advantage of your inexperience.

Thanks Greg, it's a large knife, certainly a handful for a stockman. I love the California Clip, only thing is like many GEC s it came butter spreadin' dull. Not really a problem as I always throw my own edge on a new knife anyway. Still for a $100+ knife I'd like to think they'd ship with a usable edge.

A good friend gifted it to me so I didn't say anything about the sharpness, just put my edge on it.

The earlier gec's had terrible, terrible edges. They have improved and usually come adequately sharp now, but they still do too steep of a bevel especially on the tips. I'm picky about bevel width, so it kind of bugs me.

Mail finally arrived from this purchase.....lots of International stuff today....

Amen! I like a good long bevel on a knife. Often I'll use a micro or secondary bevel too, but I want the main bevel good and big. Makes a better slicer and whittler.

This should be a stickies somewhere here. Truer words and all. A fellow collector once told me, "If you're gettin' into collectin' knives as an investment or a way to make a profit you're most likely gonna be disappointed and wind up with way less money than you started with. If on the other hand you get into collectin' knives because you like them and enjoy usin' a good sharp knife than you can reap unmeasurable pleasure and a wealth of enjoyment for a small investment. "

Today he tries to convince people on late night TV to buy 200 knives at $1 a piece and if you sell them for $10 you'll make $2,000 fame.

Hi Lssenn, Like others have said, it's a bit of a challenge to evaluate the pictures you posted. Is it possible for you to take more pictures? If so, placing the knife on a flat surface with a uniform background will help the camera to focus on the knife and prevent the knife from being blurry while something in the background is in focus. Pictures of front and back with blades open, close-ups of the stamps, and maybe a top-down view with the blades closed would be helpful.
