All About Pocket Knives

Whew! Finally made it all the way through 961 pages. I'd a been done sooner if I hadn't had to stop after every 2-3 posts and wipe the drool off my chin!

Bruno thats a beauty, those blades look to have a a lot of steel left . Nice rooskie slinger.

While participating in Tecumseh's annual Art Walk(artists demonstrating their craft at various businesses in town)I spotted this carving set in a box with a couple of old cleavers and a hand cranked grinder with a rubber wheel on it.Everything was $22.50 so I figure set worked out to about $12 give or take.Made by American Cutlery Co;according to Goins in business from 1879 to 1923 has some really nice crown stag handles;two of which had some small age cracks which I stabilized with super glue.Silver plated ferrules and butt caps finish them out.
The cleavers have no stampings on them an one is old with triple brass rivets with washers.Will eventually clean them up a bit.

Western Boulder 5206 awesome bone just came in the mail today from Steve (Knifeaholic) pictured along with the little H&B Wharncliff that I found stuck away in a folder of old Westerns in my safe. I don't have a clue where I got that one.___Dave

I got this surprise in the mail yesterday. A gift from a very special guy - Greg (gsmith7158). He saw a need (in me) and filled it without a thought. He knew I was looking for a 1st generation user but none around to buy for months so, he just gave me one of his. Guys like Greg is what makes AAPK the best knife forum on the net, hands down. To Greg! You're all heart, man! Thank you, Brother.

It's a Camillus 1st generation #72 short line with Rogers bone made in 1946. I'll be using this old "Yeller" knife for many years to come! Woohoo! Thank again, buddy!!!

These are the newest arrivals...the Pal was a gift from Schradenut. I'd mentioned I was looking for a bone handled electricians knife and darn if he didn't send me one. Thanks a lot Tony...you're one heck of a good guy. The Canal is the first one I've seen with what looks like a Dale Earnhardt #3 shield.

Italian army knife. un-used, never sharpend. This is kind of a weird one.
The center liner looks like a screw driver at the pivot end but the other end leaves me wondering.

This weekends mail call. Vulcan Tellin & Co. Sheffield c.1846-1944. Got this little knife for the shape mostly and I like horn handles.

Walker & Co. Sheffield. Was paired with the Vulcan knife I really do like the blade etch.

An unusual and attractive pattern. I like it a lot.

An update to this post. After making a new brass washer to replace the missing one on the old cleaver I decided to clean it up a bit.The spine had been hammered upon at some point in time so I very carefully;using my 1x30 belt sander ground away the peened over edge on the spine. Took a #2 lead pencil(I use a Staedtler drafting pencil with 2mm leads)and scrubbed the blade on both sides. Thought I saw the remnants of a stamp on the blade so after the pencil rub down I took used piece of 400 grit wet or dry paper and carefully started to rub over the surface.An eagle started to appear with what looked like a ribbon under it and the abbreviation of the word "Company" on it. More careful cleaning and the logo read,"American Cutlery Co."with a spread-winged eagle holding the banner. So the cleaver was made by the same company that made the carving set, but had a wood handle instead of the crown stag. Was probably bought with the carving set.
When I thought about it,it made sense:a cleaver with a stag handle would be really prone to breakage(although I have a German made cleaver with a stag handle).
The stamp is hard to see in the pic(almost impossible to photograph)but it is intact albeit a bit weak.

It looks like a version that has had the marlin spike omitted. Like how the bottom (spring side) is flat.

Imagine this knife with no marlin spike. It could just be a clunky way to use the same frame and springs on a the 2 blade version?

Ken is referring to the end of this knife...
He was thinking there was a purpose for this end, and I was just saying that his knife was possibly just a version without the marlinspike, on the same frame more or less.

I know. I was just showing a two bladed version of that style of knife. Sorry for the confusion.
