That's what I'd call it. Names can be subjective and all over the place. Take a mountain lion, jaguar, puma, cougar, catomount, wildcat, panther, etc. All the same thing. I've seen cattle knives posted as stockmen and vice versa. I like to call them what the catalogs called them if I can find the original ads.

Jimbo,your knife is not an original Kane Cutlery. Stamp is modern.The small blades would have also been stamped.Handles show shrinkage,which indicates celluloid.Bolster pins are a different color that usually means German made.The wide tangs on the small blades are similar to what you see on Bulldogs.Probably a Parker import from the 1980's- 90's made by Olbertz in Germany.

Roger & J.O. I just realized that myself. I looked it up on eBay and they have one just like it for sale. I thought it might be original but oh well. Got to get a later model book. I’ll try to delete that post. Thanks!

Ok, I’m gonna give this old and obscure thread another go after bothching that Kane cutlery post. I’ve got a Concord Cutlery Co. pearl handled custom pen knife that all my book shows to have been in business circa 1880. I also found online 1910-1930. Most likely a Sheffield Co. but not sure. Alright, here comes my photos. Any comments very welcome.

I’m also posting a Herbert Robinson pen knife made in Sheffield with striated bone handles. From what I’m reading in business 1873-1953. My price says circa 1873. There is an etch in the main blade with a fella at a grinder and it says hand forged on both blade tangs. Didn’t see this co. On the list.

Really cool old knife.
I don't know what "striated bone" is, but in the pictures this looks like french ivory celluloid to me.

Hey David thanks for the comments. My dad always called yellowish bone or celluloid with straight lines in it striated bone. Probably is celluloid though. I don’t know where he got that term from but I guess that’s where I got it. This knife seems to have a broken pin. No snap and 1 blade won’t close all the way but still a fine old knife.

Jimbo: Edw. K.Tryon was a big Philadelphia hardware firm with its own knife brand. The knives were contracted from big makers like UTICA. The big English Jack below is a Tryon, probably by UTICA. It's almost 5 inches. Great shield, eh? J.O.

Want to go ahead and post this Wade Wingfield Rowbotham. Has 3 blades but the pen blade is broken unfortunately but still shows the maker. Handles could have been changed (can’t tell) but the guts are still there. Jimbo

The fork on the Rowbottham is a cigar fork. It allows one to continue to smoke a cigar that has gotten too short to hold in one’s fingers.
And I doubt the pearl handles have been changed. That would be extremely difficult.

Thanks for the info j.o. And Robeson. That fork stabbed me a couple times cleaning it. I’m calling it a blood seeker!! Old timey roach clip for cigars, ha! I’ve been wondering what it’s for and that makes sense. I think You are right about the handles too Robeson. Be very hard to change and they look great. Hate the blade is broke!

Only one of these I've come across. ABS,Atlanta Barber Supply.Goins shows c.1920-25.I'd say pre WWI because of steel pins,liners and bolsters.

Posted this in "Knife Finds...". Thought I'd share it here. BROCH & Co., N.Y., c. 1885 . White bone, brass pins, with 11 tiny stars,(silver?) inlaid on the mark side. 2-1/2", shadow pen. Really beautiful shape. Pre-tariff, no country of origin stamp, possibly German as BROCH was an importer. Like to know more about them if anyone has any info. Thanks, J.O;.
