Very nice Dale! Like the subtle but noticeable color changes in the bone!

Thanks guys for the comments.
I think bone has more character than other handle materials with the possible exception of ivory. I like the way the bone changes as I'm working with it, hafting and polishing it. I also love the way it changes with age like it has in this knife.

Make that 5.. I like the Butter and Molasses scales.
Here's an old Cut. Co. razor, a 234K and a 863 EDC that Herman put some Candy Cane Celluloid on.

dweb1897... that is a very interesting grouping you posted. I didn't know Schrade offered straight razors.

Guessing they are pretty rare? Luv the handle on that one.
Sweet candy cane handles... How long ago did Herman create that one?
The 234K is my favorite EDC...

KAW, I sure haven't seen many Schrade straight razors. Herman Williams tells me that those handles are not stock as Schrade never used the barn door hinge bolsters, to his knowledge. At one time he worked on a lot of straight razors so I'll accept his judgement. The 233 is one of my favorite patterns and having a small collection of B&M it was a necessary addition. Unfortunatley I can't display it with my 233's because of the chance of out-gassing. I am however putting together a small display of celluloid knives. The 863 with the Candy Cane celluloid along with this 233 in Christmas Tree celluloid were done by Herman this past September with the idea of adding some color to the display. He sent this Keen Kutter straight razor with Tortoise Shell celluloid handles at the same time as a gift. The Christmas Tree and Candy Cane celluloid is some he has had on hand from his days at the Schrade factory. He believes it was of a newer style and hasn't had any problems with it out-gassing. Still, I'd rather be safe than sorry.

You guys that are showing off those straight razors......
Have y'all ever tried to shave with one?
(I have never been able to gather up enough fortitude to try it)
I have seen it done so I know it is possible to do without TOO MUCH blood loss.....
I have a few because of the history and I love the decoration some of the older ones have.
Mine is a Fredrick Reynolds.... not a Schrade....(sorry)

Those are pretty handles.
I have never used a razor, I've seen it done and that's as close as I'm going to get. I won't be putting a paper thin razor sharp blade to my throat and definitely won't let anybody else do it. I have a beard and just use a trimmer anyways.

As Paul well knows, those 856s were the only cattle knives left as Schrade offerings after the war. Dale tells us that they were listed all the way to 1961, whereupon you could purchase one for $5.35. Ulster made one that is almost indistinguishable. Great knives.

Like Punxsutawney Phil the groundhog... I decided to come out hibernation today & peek my head about the board...
Despite this polar vortex phenomenon... the mailman has been continuing to leave packages in the mailbox...
but first a quick diversion back to the straight razors... while I don't officially collect them... it would definitely be cool to have a Schrade to add to the collection... at the risk of being accused of going off topic... I do have one from NY Knife Co. that came to me from halfway around the world from an eBay seller in Estonia (formerly of the Soviet Union).
The first package the mailman delivered was an NOS Schrade 293Y Dogleg trapper still in its vies pack...
obviously a newer version (between 1974 − 79)... I have seen the photos of newer Schrade Cut
Corp. 293Y's that show the pattern number on the pile side of the tang and mine has the pattern number as the third line of the tang stamp on the mark side... Assuming the pile side number is the older way of identifying the number... Question I have is... when did they make the switch to stamping the number on the mark side?
Actually the second package is one I pick up myself as the Ebay seller turned out to be local...
a Schrade I*XL Wostenholm, Sheffield, England Limited Edition Stockman... as the paper states.. this is the first knife the partnership produced... and with the bolster stamped with Serial № WG 001... does that mean this particular knife is the very first one?
gotta go right now... but to be continued later...

Wow Ken ! You gained some very nice additions to your collection on this very sunny Groundhog Day. A nice local razor and yellow handled trapper along with a very special Wostenholm. Lucky you! Steve B.
Ken I want to thank you for starting the “Little Sheffield” thread. Definetly my favorite. Born in Ellenville, grew up in Dutchess county and worked at Stewart Air Guard base. (Retired USAF). I miss the Hudson Valley.
