I was thinking maybe it is time for you to think about building a shadow or display box an put some of those old Cams. in it and arrange as well as can be figured in Chronological order. That opener has a great thumb stud on it. Would not be a bit surprised if that old fellow did not see duty aboard a three or four master in the late Teens. I have a 17 or 21 Boarding Cutlass that you could use in your display if you want to. I forgot to say you got a real Treasure this time.

I think I would put that one in a display case and just leave it as is. Some old warriors deserve retirement and that is an old beauty with honest wear. Great knife.

I agree, at least for the time being. If it is as rare as I suspect it would only decrease the value. Besides it would take extensive work to rebuild; I think I would need to replace the liners. Finding a sheet of carbon steel would not be that easy, most supply houses only have stainless sheet steel.

Goings dates this around 1902-1915

Here is a 4-3/4" Lockback with a swing guard
Sword brand etch is still visible on blade , small
chip on lower corner by the lock release
Locks up tight and good snap still
Has the 3 line stamp

That Hobo has got to be rare

Its a Great early piece from the past
It is still tight and snappy the
3 pieces slide apart smooth and fit back snug

Those are all pre-WWII tang stamps.
Tom William said "CUTLERY" was dropped from tang stamps after WWII.
Most of the WWII stamps are 4-line.

From what I have gathered so far about Camillus tang stamps, I would think those are all 1930s or earlier.

travman, this is a real treasure!!!...i have one like it with the 4 line stamp-1914-1941, it's near mint with brown jigged bone, and it's probably my favorite camillus!-great find!!!!

It was your fine Hobo that made me search for one in that condition
i got lucky and found it with that early tang stamp

Here is another early stamp
I believe its a maize knife..the nail nick is placed a little closer to the tang
and the blade spine is shaped a little differently than the pruner

travman, where did you find your hobo knife??-i've had so many computer problems lately, i haven 't been able to search on ebay- i only have 1 camillus with a 3 line stamp(curved)- an old tuxedo knife-3 1/2" with ebony wood handles and a bar shield-wish i had more!!

That hobo is a beauty

Such a marvellous fit on this Sword Brand four line.
Tight as a drum and smooth as a snake. Still my best slipjoint.

I like that Edge, a really grrrrr8 looking knife. Bone or composite?

I found out more information about this 1915 Camillus marlinspike knife posted on page 9 of this topic.
After Christmas I emailed Mike Silvey some pictures of this knife and ask him what he knew about it.
Before I emailed him I found another mark on the knife. It appeared to be a circle with an arrowhead inside it. I sent Mike a picture of this marking as well as the ones I posted on page 9. Mike replied that the knife was made for the Canadian military during World War I. Schatt and Morgan also made this pattern for the Canadian military. The marking I had noticed on the marlinspike, Mike explained was called a ‘broad arrow’ inside of letter “C.” Upon closer inspection of the mark I did notice a serif at the top of the opening of the "C." I had assumed both sides of the circle were broken due to the small radius of the marlinspike. As it turns out only the backside of the “C” was broken due to the small radius.


Here is a better picture of the tang stamps.
It is both interesting and satisfying to me to establish the historical context and the history around a particular knife.

(That is not a good representation of a 'Broad Arrow'. They are all like the Australian mark shown below.)



Or someday you might run onto an Australian MoD mark. The 'Broad Arrow' was sometimes inside a larger 'D' similar to the Canadian mark.
