All About Pocket Knives

RG, here is an early 3 & 3/8 inch NYK company congress I have. It has very similar features to your congress. I believe KG is right that it was made by NYK company.

This pocket knife qualifies for this topic. It's another, THE W & H CO. - USA - NEWARK NJ, single blade pocket knife. According to the GOINS book, "c 1870-1959 Whitehead & Hoag was founded in 1870. They went out of business about 1959. This was an advertising specialties firm; the knives were made for them by a variety of cutlery manufacturers." It measures just a hair over 2" closed and 3 3/8" open. This is the fifth of these "W & H" "fob" knives that I've posted (4 are on the previous page) and it is the "Ugly Duckling" of the five. It needed a little cleaning. I took some pictures and here it is. If you like cheese, there is a history to the company on the handles.

Ken, your hawkbill and sheath knife are very nice. Great blade on the hawkbill.

Ridgegrass' & Lloyd's have a knice classic look to them... of course, I have a bias opinion being NYC is one of my favorite brands...

NWNY: The W & H knives are a cool group. Did you get them all at once? I have quite a bit of their stuff, buttons, pins, political things and a couple of knives. Seems they had the advertising biz cornered. J.O'.

Here's an old ( likely pre 1890) Sheffield made hawkbill stamped "Turtle" out on the blade and stamped "Sheffield & Croydon" on the tang. It's not listed in any of my reference books. The pin has been replaced but it appears nothing else has been done to the knife. I have no idea who in Sheffield made it. ____Dave

Thanks. Yeah, the hawkbill bug hit me 10 to 15 years ago. I posted pictures of most of my collection of around 400 a few years back and later pictures of the only 2 blade (saw and hawkbill blade) with a true split back spring. I'm having a little trouble finding ones I don't have but this one made the list.____Dave

Not exactly a hawkbill but close. A balloonists knife from after WW1. Plus I know Flylock made one but I don’t have a picture of one. The picture included is of the balloonists knife.

This is my most recent arrival to my all metal handle knives collection. It's a THE W & H CO. - USA - NEWARK NJ, single blade pocket knife. According to the GOINS book, "c 1870-1959 Whitehead & Hoag was founded in 1870. They went out of business about 1959. This was an advertising specialties firm; the knives were made for them by a variety of cutlery manufacturers." But with the advertising on the handles of the pocket knife, the date of manufacture can be narrowed down to circa 1930. There is a serial number(?) stamped into the handle. It measures just a hair under 2 1/4" closed and just a hair over 3 3/4" open. It is completely magnetic. I don't collect advertising pocket knives per se, but besides being all metal, it advertises a bank during the depression era and I also have a direct connection with the town/city of Poughkeepsie, but not with a bank. It needed a bit of cleaning. I took some pictures and here it is.

Howdy fellas! I've been eye-balling this thread for awhile now, but didn't want to get started on it's 90 pages until I had adequate time to browse it, and I started today. I don't know what constitutes "Old and Rare", but according to the paperwork that came with this knife I recently acquired, it was built over 30 years ago, only a few were made by hand, and it's considered very rare. I only made it through the first 10 pages, so I'm hoping that the member here who also has a copy hasn't posted his before now, but if he has, I apologize for the double-up. The reason I know that another member has a copy of this knife is because I had a deal with him to purchase his, but unfortunately the deal fell through, and then I found this copy on Ebay, along with another one that displays a different tang stamp. MY copy and the copy belonging to our fellow member have a front tang stamp of "FLT-1", and the copy that's still on Ebay has a front tang stamp of the official Blackjack Knives logo and wording, along with an asking price of US$1498., and although I paid-up a bit for mine, it was nowhere near that much. The paperwork is from Jemmy Iwahara, the same fella that Mark(SSk)deals with, so I've sent him an email inquiring why the knives have these differences, and, exactly who built it, so if and when he replies I'll try to edit this post with any new information. The knife was commissioned by Blackjack Knives to be built by Seki in Japan but never was and only a very few were produced, and Jemmy claims it's very rare. The specs are, 8 3/8" oal Blackjack "Donnybrook" stiletto/SS dagger blade with stud, NS bolsters, brass liners, and black ringed micarta covers. Weighs about 5 oz.'s, and came with only the bottom edge factory sharp. If this knife doesn't fall into the "old and rare" category, my apologies, I'm just really proud of this one and wanted to share it with you all!
