Scott -- If you look at the handles on that Imperial from the edge, does the top layer look clear? The 72 Scout I have does. You can see the 'shield' embedded in the handle from the edge of the handle.

BTW, you did a really nice job of cleaning that old feller up without destroying the patina. Lookin' good.

Scott I've got one like your scout in my EDC pile. The only thing different is the bale has been removed from mine. If you sharpend yours up and used it, you'd find it has excellent blade steel.

Dale that white handled "whittler" you've landed is a not the easiest scout to find. Congrats.

Scott;I picked one up a few weeks ago,the handles are a mess but the blades are great,walk + talk is good and she sharpened up like a razor she'll replace the Vic in the day-pac.She is 1946-56 vin.

I bought this one at a collectibles store in Des Moines, Iowa sometime in the mid-late 1990's for $5.00! I saw it while accompanying one of my buddies who was trying to find a certain Beanie Baby for his daughter - we had gone to Camp Dodge to inspect an ARNG unit that was working there and he saw the store near the camp. I bought the knife to replace my long lost Boy Scout knife - the blade steel on this one is as good as you boys describe - excellent! Good old pure, dumb luck found me this knife.

That Western is the first scout knife I've ever purchased. Any general advice or suggestions for a newbie in this field will be appreciated as I intend to develop at least a small collection.

You are about to find out that there are a vast array of scout knives out there waiting for you. It started quite innocently for me, picking up two Boy Scout knives at a flea market about four years ago. Now there are about 200 that have followed me home and they just keep showing up. It is a great pattern to collect because there are so many brands and variations that you'll most likely never stop encountering ones you haven't seen before.

Heres a pic of the new 2012 Bear & Sons Remington replica of a RS4783.....I'm sure I will buy one...but I'll wait until the price is more reasonable.

Can you tell me when Remington Made the RS3333 with the acorn shield and stubby cap lifter? I've been told it was 1923-1926 but He wasn't all that sure. I hooked the pictures below off of Ebay. My knife is the same except the blade etch legible and it never had any Cr*p on it.

Yes ..It was first introduced in 1923 it had the one piece can opener...1924-26 had the 2 piece can opener.
The one in the pic is a 2 piece...1924-26.

Here's one I got the other day. Imperial - Prov. R.I. 1936-52. Knife has never been used, carried or sharpened and was still in cosmoline when I got it. Steel bolsters, liners, pins and bail, jigged bone handles which are perfect. WWII or before??

World's coolest thread in the eyes of this 50+ newbie. I'd love to find a couple examples of the knives I carried in my dungarees pocket back in he day! I have a feeling that joining here might be costly!

I just wanted to post a word of caution to all you scout knife collectors. Currently there are a lot of etched official Boy Scout knife blades up for sale on ebay. They apparently are factory left overs (although who knows for sure the source?). Most I've seen thus far have an Imperial tang stamp. I suspect you'll start seeing a lot more "near mint" Imperial scout knives available in the very near future. Buyer beware!

There's only 4 variations with the Acorn shield that I'm aware of...an official and nonofficial in 1923....and the same for 1924-26 models.
I have yet to see a 1924 -26 nonofficial model....but I assume they made one.
Nonofficial's with the acorn shield are a bit more rare....Heres a pic of my 1923 below.

Prices vary on condition...like any other knife. ..I use ebay as more of a realistic price guide as opposed to a book.
