Thanks Cal, I like it too. This one is much better than the swinden 708's that got much fatter, it is very slim. I mistakenly called it a 710 rather than a 708 (I was mixing it up with an 810), so maybe that's why you didn't find it :D Here is a catalog cut.

The knife doesn't appear in any of the catalogs that are available but it does show up on two pricelists - 1950 and 1955. The 1950 listing calls for a tooled back but the '55 doesn't. I'll post some pics when I get it - I can't tell from the ebay pictures.

Put this one in the boys knife thread but it belongs here also, early Schrade Cut Co jack, really slim sheeps foot, unfortunately been buffed.

Picked up a pair of minty trappers this past week, one is a bone Schrade 293. Really like this size trapper.

Here ya go - the 818M in all her tiny glory. 2.75", obliques, cleaned inside but no file work on the back.

That one is sweet Jason, now I wish I would have tried for it. However I didn't because I was saving for a higher priority, which I did win. You'll see it here soon :D

I found this gem amongst two other knives that it didn't belong with, so I rescued it to be with its peachseed brethren :D

Thanks for the good words. Herman said it was a real son of a gun to work with,,,the rings kept separating. I was surprised at the cost of the ivory...$48 delivered.

I got this 861 Schrade Walden on a trade and it was described as "rough". There is a lot of blade wear and there is a little piece of the pile side bone missing but it is such a comfortable HOK! It walks and talks and will slowly be cleaned up, sharpened and get a little pocket time.
I was surprised that it has "jimping" along the back side of the liners. The stamp is the '46-'73 mark, USA w/o the periods. Is that time frame '46-'73 as close as this one can be nailed down? Any thoughts about age would be appreciated.

I would think the bone handles close the gap to '46-'61 or so and the milled back probably makes mid-fifties more likely for the top side of the range. So maybe '46-'55ish?

It's hard to nail it down for sure, it's safe to say '46-'61 as that's when it shows in the catalogs described with bone handles.

The 1954 catalog describes the milled back...

...but the 1961 catalog does not. The catalogs in between '54-'61 only describe the pattern number, handle material, length and price. No other details are given in the catalogs between these years. Notice this also does not describe whether the large blade was polished on one side, though it likely was. It's also likely it still had the milled back but maybe also had the red wavy jig bone that was used in the last S-W days before bone ended.

They added USA to the stamps about 1951 to 1955 (???), and quit using bone about 1960 or 1961.

Thanks for the information, fellers! ::handshake:: Every once in a while, an old "rough" knife really gets my attention, this is one of them. ::hmm::

It's worn but doesn't look too rough, and is a very desireable pattern! It looks much better than some schrades I own that I would definitely say are rough.
