Came in the mail yesterday. 100th Anniversay 1876-1976. Just sad that Camillus would close its doors 31 years later.

Good looker Jtx, very sad though. Even sadder is the same happened to Schrade and then Queen. And Studabaker, Nash, Rambler, AMC, Indian Motorcycles, Henderson, Janus, Hodaka... the list is long and despressing.

Does anybody know why Camillus went belly up? I read, but cannot confirm, that the woman owner and her daughter squandered the profits in Vegas.

Yep, you’re right, Iman. I can add Pontiac, DeSoto, Woolworths, A&P - lots who were part of my growing up and some who had been around for as much as 100 years - yet no longer exist.
I did get interested in Camillus’ history after getting this knife. Why did they go belly up? Their history says things started going bad around 2005, and a 6-month strike at a time when they were struggling financially didn’t help matters, so in 2007, they shut the doors. This knife, to me, represents a happier time for the legendary company.

Yup, good additions there in the cars. I had a couple Pontiacs and a couple Oldsmobile's and probably never will again. Wonder why Camillus things started to go bad? Was it their quality control or market forces beyond their control? Because I still feel like GEC and Case, even Queen made it through that year or those years and came out profitable. I know GEC didn't start until 2006, but they were a no name start up then, and they made it work. I think becasue they made knives people liked and sold them for a price people thought was acceptable or a decent value. I still feel like Schrade and Camillus could have survived if they were building quality, well made knives. The few Camillus I have are pretty good, even compared to the market leaders. There's plenty of market for good knives in the US still. Surprises me because that was also just around the time there started to be a sort of renaissance or growing interest in good traditional knives. And people will pay big bucks for Tuna Valley and custom Traditionals like these Bill Rupple knives, Red Trout, and Lloyds and Davidsons. But they have to be good quality and seen to be worth the price. Thanks for the info anyway, interesting to hear it. Have a good one.

I got shipped to me today a box of knives, most went in my store, but this Moki was already spoken for but I wanted to show it. For any of you that has never had a Moki they are handmade in Japan and they are in line with custom made one offs. This happens to be a Glory MOP.

Not to drag this out, but Camillus’ demise seemed to coincide with “The Great Recession” of 2007-2009 which was considered “the most severe economic and financial meltdown since the Great Depression.” It began in 2005 when the housing bubble burst and property values plummeted. Don’t have any stats to quote, but considering the climate at that time, sales must have been down. I was a state employee at the time.
