All About Pocket Knives

Hello everyone! So many awesome knives posted here. I am new to knives and have been trying to identify lots of Keen Kutters, but cannot figure this one out. 0198F - E.C. Smmons Made in USA stamp. I know it's old, but thats all I've been able to learn. I read in another post that the F stands for file.... any information would be appreciated; you guys seem pretty smart!

In Sellens' "Keen Kutter Pocket Knives", he says the 0198F was in the catalogues from 1914 thru to 1929. There should indeed be a Curley nail file on that knife, instead of the punch. The knife does not show any of the obvious signs of having been apart, so perhaps it was a factory error?? Sellens also says the "Made in USA" stamp was used in the 1920s. The kick on the master blade also appears to have been filed. Likely to keep it below the liners, when closed, due to the extensive resharpening wear on the blade.

Thanks Danno! That sounds kinda neat to me. I wonder how rare factory errors are, and if collectors are interested in such anomalies.

Was taking another look at this. The pivot pin on the punch blade is showing. It is more likely that the file blade was replaced with the punch at sometime during this knife's life. Not an expert, but, I believe that factory errors of this type would be very rare. Still a nice old knife with a lot of history.

If you are meaning more Keen Kutters, we would definitely like to see them. Or any other knives you have.

Your Whittler 2 pictures up would probably fetch the highest amount, followed by the Jack and Stockman. Advertisement knives usually don't sell high unless it's a highly sought after National brand, like Nehi or the old Anheuser-Busch Bartender knives for example. Plus condition is a key factor- collectors want full, pristine blades.

The only way to know value for sure is to post them on eBay and see how high they go. Of course there's tricks to selling for top dollar there as well. Hope this helps.

Any one interested in a four sided KEEN KUTTER display case? Glass sides so it would be tough to ship.

I picked this easy open jack up at a flea market a few years ago, it was dirty, a little rusty, and had a good bit of blade wobble. I cleaned it, carefully re-peened it, and the dressed the bolsters. I am told its made by Schrade and dates to the early 1940s. I won't sell it because I couldn't replace it. It is, beyond a doubt, my nicest folder. The boys or 3/4 axe (that I hung) is a gift from my Dad that has obviously seen some use, abuse, and neglect. I apologize the stamp doesnt show well in the pic.

Speaking theoretically, would it be a crime against humanity if someone found a knife very much like yours, re-peened it to remove blade wobble, then dressed the pivot pin/bolster?

I picked up this Keen Kutter cattle knife at the gun show yesterday. Never seen one with 3 springs, a curved frame with swell center and sleeve board features all on one knife. Blades are in good shape, nice bone, and it snaps like a bear trap.

OC that knife has it all! It certainly is a looker and bet it would be a worker as well. Great bones. Congrats.
