All About Pocket Knives

Thanks Jerry. The knife you asked about is a recent (1999) manufacture with abalone scales. It's one of the most recently manufactured pocket knives I have and I bought it because of those beautiful scales. I'm posting a better picture of it. If you enlarge it you will see all her splendor.

Looking forward to seeing your whittlers. I can't offer up a near mint cracked ice 9383SAB but you made me go dig out my celluloids. Best I can do is a well used Tested XX cracked ice 9383SAB. Guess I will have to suffer with it until a better one comes along.

A couple of beauties there Ken!!! I need to take some new pics of the XX 9383SAB, the others were pretty bad.
In the meantime, I have an Abalone example, same frame and year as yours. Very firery handles for sure. Please forgive the reflections on the blades as it was a cloudy day.

Those abalone scales are beauties; I can see why you gentlemen like them.

Here some older whittler knives I have.

When I think about older collectible knives I always have to think about how difficult they were to manufacture. The amount of fitting and adjusting that goes into a 3 blade whittler is considerably more as compared to a 2 blade jack or pen knife. The more experienced cutlers were given the task to assemble and fit these knives. Given that, these knives were more expensive to make and in turn to buy back in the day. It then makes sense that they would command a premium as a vintage collector's knife.

A costly EDC that I enjoy greatly.

CASE TESTED 63052 Congress Splitback Whittler in Green Bone. A well used, gently cared for old gem. Be worth some bucks if mint but I decided to carry her and enjoy it as I will not get my money out on it.

I have this Wyeth's Warranted Cutlery Knife .It a gunstock, cattle,whittler.Any idea when it was made.

Your Wyeth whittler looks exactly like a Western States Cut & Mfg. Co. whittler I have, 3 11/16 closed. From handle material I would say Early 20's to mid 30's. My best guess. Love those handles!

This is my stag handled lock back whittler by Al BABCOCK HARDWARE C0. A lot of workmanship and small blades still have the half stops.

Wonderful old whittler, and very difficult knife to make. Thanks for showing it. I have been coveting one of the recent Case/Tony Bose lockback whittlers but can't afford one, especially when there are older, vintage knives out there to be found.

Here is a Camillus whittler I purchased a while back.
It was made around 1916.It has a couple of problems .A crack in one handle and one of the small blades has not snap.These problems don't worry me as this would be classed as a rare knife and you can see by my avatar that it takes pride of place.I have posted this knife before in the Camillus forum.I was ask by another member if I would post it here.

A couple of beautiful and rare (and I really do mean rare - not in the eBay sense) old whittlers.

Here's a whittler that a friend was kind enough to give to me. These are Ken Erickson's pictures and description of the knife.

"Here is a neat little whittler with the mark, E. Bruckmann Soligen Germany. If not mistaken this mark was active until 1956 or 57?
This is a cigar shaped whittler with buffalo covers, no shield. Iron bolsters, brass liners coined on the backspring side. The swedging, grinds, and workman ship on this knife is first class. No halfstops, double pulls on the master blade. This knife appears pretty much unused, un-cleaned.
3 3/8 closed."

Beautiful old knife!

Shearer - I really like that old Camillus whittler. It is very like my Case Seahorse whittler, which is close to becoming my favorite folding knife.

ObsidianEdge - I like that old cigar whittler too. I have seen new (China made) whittlers with the double nail nick. I did not realize that the double nail nick was an old pattern.

Jacknifeben - I know that I commented on that old Babcock whittler in another thread, but I do think that it is an especially interesting whittler.
