All About Pocket Knives

Here are a couple I picked up today;one of which has ebony scales.It is an Ulster 2 blade with what I believe is a very old etch.Unusual in that it has fluted bolsters and the blade is etched with a scimitar and the words,"Toledo Blade"(I think the last word is Blade). The blades were pretty crudded up so I applied some polish after scraping and found the etch.Anyone ever seen that on an Ulster before?

The other knife is a Kutmaster with beautiful finely jigged bone scales and reasonably full blades.Price was good too:$30 for both.

Thanks, me neither. I have most of my knives in flat cases so if I have a bad day I just go in the knife room and start opening knives and forget about every thing else. Always ready to show them if you are in south east Iowa.

Sorry to not have gotten back to you sooner Jacknifeben. I hear you about forgetting about everything else when opening up pocket knives. It is so easy to get engrossed in studying them! Its amazing how much of my spare time is devoted to them! I appreciate the offer to see your collection, and if I am every in South East Iowa I will surely send you a note as I would love to see them in person

Just picked up this Robeson/Shure Edge(script)/ROCHESTER other side of main blade 132433 according to Charlies web site she is 1922-1939.Both the other blades have ROBESON(ARCHED)/USA/CUTLERY.What a WELL built knife.What kind of steel are these blades??

Here is my latest ebony handled knife, Cattaraugus King Of The Woods. You can still see an etch on the blade and it has the straight line 4 line tang stamp.

Wow Jacknifeben that is an amazing looking specimen there! From the bolsters to the shield to the handles to the blade, love it! Interesting how the nail pull goes right up to the edge of the swedge.

I'm glad the ebony catt. Was posted. I've been told b4 that catt. Never made a ebony king of the woods.
Heres mine.

Those are great rigwelder. That is a very nice Lakeside jack, and the sheepsfoot Simmons is sweet.
This THOMASTON KNIFE CO CONN has seen a lot of use but the blades are still very sharp and snap fiercely. The ebony of course makes for a very lovely handle.

Nice Catt. rigwelder, I think the ebony King Of The Woods might be the most rare of the bunch. Is there any etch on yours? I have a faint etch on mine but there is no number stamped on the back tang.

No, ,its got a nice full blade but the etch is gone.
It doesnt have a pattern number Number.
I agree, i think the ebony handled king is more rare too. None of my books even list a king with ebony handles.

I have been working on Camillus tang stamps and made new scans of this ebony jack.
The tang stamps would place it about 1915 if Goins is correct on his dating. Here is the tang stamp:

They were obviously not worried about matching handles. This is the pile side handle:

This is a old Mcknight. 1892-1895

knife-nut: That is one good looking knife!! I particularly like the fact that it has two large blades rather than the usual master & pen blades found in most jacks. I had never seen that tang stamp before. Thanks for posting.

I love that sheepfoot blade, it almost looks like a grafting blade!
