All About Pocket Knives

Got this 1946-1956 Imperial fish knife from whit107 in the recent POS roundtable. It was really fugugly when I pulled it out of the box. I removed the wraps, hit the rusty spots (lots of them) with the wire wheel, re-profiled the broken blade tip and scrubbed the blade with Mothers and a Scotch Brite pad. A generous oiling of the blade pivot restored the snap. After a few licks on the Lansky she slipped into my pocket and has been up to the challenge of fulfilling all my cutting needs for the past week. Pocket wear is shining up the handles but I'm afraid all the rust pits will always betray her heritage. She may not be pretty but she does everything I need her to do.

Great work Jerry....I didn't realize the fish was punched out of the inner shell...if I make any sense, or if I'm seeing it correctly.

You are seeing it correctly. The wrap had a fish shaped hole in it to fit over the fish embossed in the metal shell. I should take another picture to show how shiny she has become after just a week in my pocket.

Here are a couple AB knives I wish were in better condition

That's the thing about these old knives. They come from a time when these were tools. People used them , there were no collectorsso when we run up on one we need to cherish it. It is a part of American history and we need to presreve that. Sure it would be great to have one in mint condition but no one who had a knife in those times placed it on the mantle for others to view.

Most people today still buy them to use. Those of us that collect (accumulate?) knives are in the minority.

One of my good friends is a home builder. We sometimes hunt together. He's seen most of my knife collection. Several years ago I gave him a new bone-handled Case stockman for his birthday. About 3 months later I was with him when he pulled a knife out of his pocket to scrape some glue off something. It looked like the knife I gave him, so I asked him if I could see it. He handed it to me. The sheepsfoot blade was broken off at the tang. The tip was broken on the master. The handle on one side was cracked and the backsprings had been used to hammer something, probably several times. Obviously he was using it for a lot of tools besides a knife! I said something like "You sure are hard on a knife. Isn't this the one I gave you a couple months ago?" He laughed and said it was, and he was hoping I'd give him another one next year.

Not saying my friend is typical of most knife owners. Many use their knives to open boxes and clean fingernails. Either way they're using them for a tool. Hopefully most use them as knives instead of pry bars, screwdrivers, or hammers!

Since Dimitri ressurected this post I thought I'd add a couple more.
First up is an H.W.Mason 8 blade congress with a couple broken blades. Couldn't pass up this one;how many 8 blade knives have you ever seen?
Next is a tiny I*XL tuxedo pattern with broken blades and scales. Bought it along with a couple other knives.Couldn't let it set there all alone after I bought it's buddies right?
The John Watts knife was mint when I bought it and on the way home it fell off the seat and lodged in the seat track. In trying to get it out I slid the seat back and destroyed the scale and lost the shield that was on it.It is STILL somewhere under the front seat.

Next up is a Needham Brothers.Don't see too many knives with an IVORY master blade.
Next is a tiny multi-blade marked, A*1 Tyler Celebrated Cutlery. Probably English as a couple of the blades have small tabs affixed to the blades to ease opening.
Up next is a Simmons Hardware lobster that would be very nice if the tang on the madter blade wasn't worn to the point that the blade sticks out prominently.
Last is a Binghams Hardware pearl tuxedo with fancy bolsters and a broken pen blade.

Got this ole 4 line Camillus.......

Here's a AJ Jordan Sheffield - 4 & 3/4" jumbo sleeveboard with stag... blades and springs have issues in that nail nicks dip into liners and while master blade has some light snap the other does not... plus the master was repinned but not very professionally... blades were just plain abused... but if in good condition what a beauty this would be Quick pic on phone is not great but neither is condition of knife ... bought it for the price of a bag of peanuts...

Here is a Manhattan Cutlery, imported from Germany by Boker through their New York City offices (?) from 189X to 1906 in nice stag, good on both sides. The clip blade is loaded in behind the sheepfoot, which seems odd. There is a tang stamp of what appears to be a native American fellow standing with a spear. This knife still has good snap and no play. No half stops.

Beautiful bone handles! That would make a great EDC

I have never seen a Robeson knife in this poor of condition.

It's listed on Ebay as a metal detector find on the side of Lookout Mountain.

Somehow, just prolonged exposure to the elements does not explain this.

Broken, Battered, Beat-Up, Bruised But Hardly Beautiful.
