Bob, definitely Ulster, the Craftsman 9467 was the Ulster 115. A lot of folks try to hang that knife backwards, the hanger actually slides up from behind the belt, so that all you see from the front is the outside portion of the "hook".

The patent was issued to Henry Baer and Ulster Knife Co. in 1958, and he almost immediately re-assigned it to Imperial (really just a formality since at that time they were one and the same). Here's my Cattaraugus Whitt-L-Craft..... no bail, but a sweet little scout knife. I always wondered what all of those odd shaped knife edges were supposed to be used for?

New York Knife made knives with the shield like that, but they hung on brackets in a display case with the backsprings up, so the shield was right side up.

What you say has some truth. But, here is the problem I have. Only one knife sat in that display card. It was mearly to show potential customers what the knife looked like, and what blades it offered, etc.. All the other knives to be sold sat in 1/2 dozen knife boxes behind the counter. When the customer wanted to buy one that is where the clerk would get one and sell it to the customer. I doubt he would take the one off the display card each and every time.

Several older knife companies had shields this way, Challenge, NYK, Remington, and several German made ones, to name a few.

The only thing that makes any sense to me about these upside down shields is that with the master knife blade in the open position, if your are right handed, and most people are, the shield could be seen and read while the user was using the knife. This could be seen by potential knife buyers and was probably an advertising tactic. Not only scout shields are this way there are other advertising shields that are on upside down.

The photos of those two NYK boards were sent to me by a West coast scout collector in response to my query about an NYK "Army Knife" on Ebay that had an upside down shield. It wasn't the first NYK scout/utility I had seen with such a shield, and that's what prompted my question.

Seems like there was anoth photo with upside down knives on it. I cannot seem to find it at the moment.

I have a friend here in town with an old orange & black original Winchester board that held about thirtysix knives, maybe twentyfour, I can't remember. All the knives hung on up-turned metal brackets like the ones on the NYK boards. Don't know if any of the old Winchesters from that board had word imprinted shields, but if so, I suspect they were upside down, too.

First let me say that that's one heck of a rare display board, very impressive!!!!!

Schrade had several similar displays with the knives hanging by metal brackets. Here's a shot of a stationary display with a few knives as examples, they also had a rotating display with the same concept:

Next one up, my Hibbard Spencer Bartlett & Co scout. Gotta admit those red bone knives really call out to me.....
I couldn't find anything in my reference guides about this scout/utility knife.

That main blade has me drooling on my keyboard man!!!

Interesting that you mention another knife maker. That "spiral" awl appears frequently on official scout knives made by the New York Knife Co.

Camillus must have made most of the Scout/utility knives, before SAKs came along! Two of these are Camillus-made and one is an NYK. I love the double pulls on the NYK. The punch on that knife is NOT tipped! It's short on purpose, barely fitting in alongside the main blade. I thought at first it had been broken, but it is actually barely used, unlike the main which is down some.
Anyone know anything about the shield?
The other two speak for themselves I think.

The one-piece punch with the spiral grooves, and sometimes stamped "spiral" or "spiral punch" is indicative of a Camillus-made knife.
New York made a different spiral punch, much more complicated, with a laminated tang.

Thanks guys... I guess the devil is in the details... Too many knife companies making knives for other companies for me to keep track of. I think I'll just stick to appreciating knives for their beauty. Kind of like Just Plain Dave and his spear blade fetish - except I'm more of handle guy!
