I haven't bought or hunted for any axes for a long while. My wife bought me a Hults Bruks Hatchet for our anniversary. It's just going to be a wall hanger, but, I can tell you one thing, that baby is sharp.

That is beautiful! Something about the Swedish axes draws me in. Feel free to post that in the Gransfors Bruks, Hulst Bruks? axes thread is you care to. I have started collecting Scandinavian axes, which is good in that it keeps my collection relatively small as they are hard to find on the secondary market, locally (not buying online).
My only other recent find was this hand forged hatchet made from a ball peen hammer.

I saw the HB thread, I'll stick it over there. I collect Savage 1899 rifles so I can't afford to collect anything else. All of my knives and axes come cheap at farm auctions. But, the prices have gone up there too.

The Savage Model 99 in .308, was the first rifle over .22 cal. that I ever owned. My uncle gave it to me back in the 1980's when I was a just a kid. I still have it to this day. My Axes came from yard sales and flea markets and I have given up on all that,

everyone looks on their phone and says "I see one on eBay for $50 so I'll have to have $50 for mine.....

I used to pay about $5 max when out hunting for axes .... not any more....

I was hunting a 300 yard field. First day I was hunting the woods and the edge of the field with my 1905 1899 in 38-55. Saw 2 nice 8 point bucks at about 150 yards, out of range for the 38-55. Next day I used my 1928 in 303 with a Weaver 4X. Saw the same 2 big bucks at the far end of the field, out of range for the 303. About 10 years ago I gave my best friend a mint 99DL in 308 with a 3X9 Leupold on it. I borrowed it from him because I knew it would reach out to 300. Last day with the 308 a nice 6 point walked out at about 40 yards.

Excellent story, beautiful shot and a great picture! I like the .308 as versatile cartridge, from 130 gr. Speer varminter bullet to the 168 gr BTMH for target work, to the 175, 185, or 190's for more energy out-to-distance. I used to reload hundreds and hundreds of rounds every year, when I lived a few miles from a local range that had lanes out to 600 meters. Then I moved away and the world changed.... ammo and components went sky-high, the shooting areas in the new place shut down one by one... it's a brave new world....

Most of my collection is pre WWI. Lately rare models have just fallen in my lap. A couple years ago some one said, "Joe just can't let a 250 get past him." A member in Fla contacted me and said he heard I was looking for another 250. Before I could say anything, he said he had a New In Box 250A Saddle Gun with 22" barrel. I think they only made the 22" barrel one year. He let me have it for $900. I had never seen a used one go for less than 2K.About a month ago I called a local gun shop and asked if they had a Leupold one piece scope mount for a 99? He said, no, but I have a 99 in 284 that's been on the shelf for months. You come get it today I'll give you a clearance deal. He said the tag was $950, he'd let me have it for $750. 5 hours later I had been to WV and back and had a 284 in my gun room. I really got lucky and stopped at an indoor range and asked if he had any 284 ammo. He had 4 boxes that had been on the shelf for years. Let me have them for $30 a box. Going price now is $75 a box and no one has them. That's why I can't buy axes and knives anymore.

Affordable knives that are not SMKW Chinese Marbles or Rough Ryders and affordable hatchets still pop up once in awhile at gun shows, thrift stores and garage sales. However, if you do not enjoy the hunt then the time involved is not well spent. All of us already have a satisfactory knife and hatchet anyway.
My first Savage 99 was in the 1970s. It was a straight grip light .250 that was ony a couple years old. Maybe it was a reprooduction of what you are calling a saddle gun. In the 1990s I had a pre-WW II Savage 99 .30-30 saddle ring carbine that, except for the butt plate, was the same shape and size as best as I can recall. My .250 did not have the barrel band that my Savage 99 .30-30 had. I wish that I still had that .30-30. Your new Savage 99 .284 Winchester should eliminate the need to borrow a .308.

I wish I had picked up a few more 99's in other calibers years ago, now the prices on everything have, gone through the roof. I love the Reminton 8/81 and those have gone sky-high over the past few years.
As I recall I bought my 1st Remington Model 81 rifle maybe 10 years ago or less, for $350 (sometimes one might go for $250). I started to get into the 8's and 81's and they started to go for $450, then up from there. Now they are around $800. The cost of factory ammo is through the roof if you can find it (reloading saves the day on that cost).
I LOVE the hunt, but in my town, it has become a giant waste of time. I can't stop at 12 yard sales on a Saturday and come up with nothing over and over again and just keep hoping "There has to be something at the next sale". The thrift stores are a waste of time, the pawn shops list anything good on ebay. I go in a pawn shop and there is a trapper knife in the display case. I ask about it and the guy says, "It is also listed for sale on eBay, so I want $100 for it" and it is a busted up, worn out 1997 Case XX trapper, sharpened on a grinder.
I used to buy big old cleavers and axes at the local FLEA MARKET about 7 years ago for $5-$10, now all the sellers look on eBay on their phone and say, "I want $25-$50", so almost no more axes and cleavers for me. And not so many knives ether.

Was cleaning up my gun room last week in the 20 degree weather. Was up in the garage looking for a box. Saw one the perfect size and dumped it out. This cute little axe head slid out. I have no memory where or when I got it. Says Alaskan on top and Warren, PA under. Feels like it's only 2-3 pounds. Cool little axe.

Finishing up on refurbishing the Plumb boy's ax... a little soaking in some oil to revive the wood in the eye hole.

Big disappointment! This little axe had some flaring around the poll where it had been beaten on. I picked it up to take downstairs to work on dressing/squaring up the the edges. Looked through the eye hole. It's obvious it was being used as a wedge without a handle in it. The eye is caved in on one side and bulged out on the other. I might be able to heat it up cherry red and force a handle in it and reshape it. Don't think I'll bother. I might dress the edges up on the poll and make a shadow box with with boy's axe heads. It still looks nice from the sides.
