Right now this is what I'm carrying, my favorite flavor. Beautiful "Black" Camel bone GEC Tidioute #83 Small Lock Back. Looks more like Appaloosa bone, mottled like the horses, beautiful and pics don't capture it. Excellent bone. Amazing depth. Lots of blade for the compact size. Handle shape looks same as #72 only smaller. #72 Ebony Wharncliffe thrown in so you get an idea of size.

Ivoryman, that Camel bone 83 is a beauty, great new knife from GEC.
I've been carrying this Case red bone for the last couple days.

Right back at ya John, about the only thing this sweet little 83 doesn't have is age like that sweet soup bone you have there. Love those gnarly soup bones and Case products from the sixties and seventies. Great looking miles on that one.

At scout camp today the woodcarving leader was showing the boys his knife and trying to whittle with this big, cumbersome, stud flipper, wide blade, Gerber tactical something or other. Blind leading the blind. Couldn't carve with it. He and all the scouts had cheap ugly tactical clones, black handle and blade, over done, Chinese gas station types for $10. None were built for carving. The teacher was showing them sharpening stones while telling them to take their knives to Ace Hardware to have them sharpened for you. How about teaching the young men to sharpen their own knives? Nope, they just show and tell, they don't do and learn, or experience. Told the leader to let them try sharpening. He did relent and actually let them have some hands on time, but no whittling or knife sharpening is being taught there. Just putting together pre-made leather headed, dowel handled tomahawks that require no skill or learned technique, useless when finished. Sad. So I showed them a different knife than they had and they liked it. Didn't know there was a such a thing as a whittler knife and they are taking a whittling class. That pretty much sums it up.

As for the woodcarving leader, I guess I would like to believe he stepped in for the sake of the kids when no one else would. At least it was something knife related. Better than nothing.

He's an Eagle Scout, Order of the Arrow, multiple palms, passed all the leader training courses, supposed to know his stuff. But he's a non wood carver teaching wood carving. We pay money for this. When I was a kid we actually carved stuff and they taught us how. We got our hands dirty and bloody. These kids hear lectures and stories about it but they don't actually do it.

No doubt avoiding the possibility of a lawsuit because a kid was cut with a knife.

Don't get me started on them paided Scout Leaders--they as bad as elected politians in my book--both are worthless--my boys turned into their 20's and them people would still call me & the X trying to look for free baby sitters---thing is we pulled our kids out after the first year of Cubs Scouts but we was the only ones that would actually do anything with the kids & the the one parent was a paid professional collage graduated Boy Scout--that guy couldn't change a spark plug on a push mower by himself-----

When I was a leader, I taught all my boys the proper use and care of packet knives. I bought them used, serviceable old-school Cub Scout knives off ebay, and let them keep the knives once they earned their chip. We started carving soap, and then graduated to wood after. The boys proudly took their knives to resident camp, where we were then told that they could not carry and use them throughout the camp areas.

Who does that? We ended up letting the boys use their knives while in their immediate camping area.

Never heard of starting them on soap either Glennbad. Brilliant, thanks for the tip. Wish I knew that seven years ago when we were in cubs starting out. Bingo, that is genius. We just tried to start them on pine and balsa wood, soft woods. Soap would be even better for them and more forgiving. I'll use that one. Thanks.
