All About Pocket Knives

Mark, i'm glad you stuck around, bud! I don't know why anyone would give you a hard time about somebody over charging for shipping. Right is right and wrong is just wrong!
What has kind of thrown a monkey wrench in for me, is Ebay's new shipping terminologies. The terms "standard shipping" & "economy shipping" can basically mean anything. Neither are terms that the USPS use. It almost seems that sellers use those shipping terms, coupled with inflated cost, as a buffer zone to make more money if they feel an item sold for too little. So, it's kinda like the notorious box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get!
For me, I have more of an issue with time, then cost. Parcel post can take up to 10 days. I figure the longer it's in the system, the more chance of loss or damage. Crazy part is, when it comes to shipping a single knife, the savings between ParPost and 1st class, is like $.15, and if that weren't enough, you can't put confirmation/tracking on ParPost.
I know I sound like i'm belly ache'n, i'm really not. I know what i'm getting into when I make the purchase. But, I have to admit, I am pleasantly surprised when I make a purchase with $6 shipping and listed as "standard shipping", and it actually comes in via Priority Mail.
Jerry, I came across one like that the other day. It was a Hammer Brand shell handled pen knife. $.99 start and $24.99 shipping within the U.S. I still hafta wonder if it was a typo.

IMO.......keep in mind....this is MY OPINION.....

Shipping is part of the total price. If a knife sells for $1.00 with $14.95 for shipping and it's a Robeson Jigged Bone Easy Open......the total paid is $15.95. That iS THE COST OF THE KNIFE TO ME.

I always, always, always include the price of shipping when calculating my purchases. Is the knife worth $15.95? Is the knife worth the going price, plus shipping?

It's just the way I do things........just my opinion.

I always decide the value or what I'm willing to pay for a given item, then subtract the listed shipping cost. If I'll pay $20 and s/h is $6, then I bid $14 and let it ride. Skipped one just last night. Little barlow went for the opening bid of $.99, but s/h was priced at $12.99. Pass.......

I kinda walk a line when it comes to shipping, Scott. If I find a knife that I figure is worth $20 and it has $3-$4 for 1st class shipping, i'll bid the full $20 for the knife and basically ignore the shipping. It's gonna cost something to get it here, one way or another. However, if I figure that knife is worth $20 and it has $14.95 shipping, i'm not gonna bid the full $20 for the knife. Especially if it's listed as "economy shipping"! For me, the method of shipping has as much to do with my decision as the shipping cost. I just hate that it's kind of a game that you have to play.
Personally when I sell on Ebay, 99% of the time I do free shipping, and I always use the terms "1st class" or "Priority", never "standard" or "economy". It's straight forward and buyers always know exactly what to expect!

I am right there with you Scott.
I guess it comes from being in the retail cutlery & tobacco business too long. Shipping and taxes are part of the cost of goods.
When I log a knife I purchase into my spread sheet, I add the shipping as part of the cost.


I don't sell on ebay exactly because of their fees. In my AAPK store I figure my cost to ship the average 4" stockman is about $1.90 postage and $1 for the padded envelop and additional bubble wrap, tape, etc, so I charge $3 to ship most small knives. Some times it costs a bit more, but I figure it on an average.

If a seller on ebay charges $10 to ship a knife (unless weight & size of object warrants it) I won't bid.
I figure they have integrity issues and I don't want to do business with them.

That is how I see it.

I find this very interesting, and I have a scenario i'd like to throw out there.
You go to a pawn shop or flea market and you find a knife that you figure is worth $20. The shop has it marked at $25. So you shoot the works and offer them $15 out the door. They come back with an offer of $20 out the door. Do you buy the knife?

I sell knives on the e-bay several times a year___ I ""ONLY"" ship using __USPS Priority Mail with delivery confirmation,in the small flat rate box !!!! @ cost, which is $6.10 as we speak_____ I have had a few folks ask me to ship it regular mail & a few ask for over-night delivery ( I tell them the same thing""only priority mail in a flat rate ""BOX"")__________ the box protects the knife better & we both can watch the knife as it travels to it's new home and only takes a couple days to arrive !! ____heck, I even ship my "'POS"" knives the same way !!!!___they have all arrived,safe & sound !!!!!___JMHO,Monk

Mornin' Scott & friends! Been up since 3:30CDT. The buddy I helped hang the door, BBQ'd a 15 lbs. pork roast and sent half that sucker home with me! I ate pig last night until I squealed like one! Nothing like a massive case of heartburn in the wee hours of the morning! When will I ever learn?!

Yogi Bear usually brings the basket full of goodies - of course beginning this season we have a black bear season in Wilson County - old Yogi might better look out! Had two nice bucks on this farm a month ago - one of them (that we know of) was poached two weeks ago - poacher took a small amount of meat off the hams, cut the rack off, and left the carcass to the buzzards - right next to the road. I can still see no reason for poachers and thieves to consume the oxygen the rest of us need to live and contribute to the greater good - we have become such a soft society. OH

hi everyone. sitting here drinking my daily dose of java to satisfy my addiction. then its off to the rock mt. sporting clay club.
they are about 20 miles down the road and have a 200 bird shoot today. shooters do 100 birds in the morning and then go again to shoot 100 birds at 1:00 from different traps. i am one of the state referrees. it is always a bunch of fun scoring for the guys and gals at these things.
2 months ago that club held the pa. state sporting clay shoot. it went for four days and we had about 250 shooters for each day. made for long days especially on the last day when it did the only thunderstorm for the weekend. it was around the last 30 mins of the shoot, but we had to wait around 2 hrs for it to let up, darn shoot just didn't wany end......but all in all, it was a great turnout and fantastic weather.
today we expect 125 shooters. and although we need it badly, its raining outside now. it is supposed to clear up in an hr or so,,i hope it does for the balance of the day.

My Sat was pretty much spoiled by a poor, poor performance by my team. Can't run, can't block, can't play defense, can't cover on special teams; what would I expect. Sooners did a great job!

That sounds like a good time Chetr, When I was about 13 yrs. my neighbor owned a trap and skeet club nearby and I worked the huts loading the machines just so I could shoot after hours. I miss that alot!

Tomorrow morning I have to take my wife to the hospital for surgery.
She is having her right knee replaced. She had the left knee replaced in March.
At least this time if all goes well she will be able to help me at the OKCA show in April.
I sure missed her last year!

sad to say, but my wife needs her knees done but alas,,,,,,,,,,,,no insurance since her teamster place packed up over a year ago and left town for france. and thats the job where her knees went bad
