Thanks Scott, it is an awesome time away. I really enjoy and look forward to the time outdoors every year. I do wish my wife would come with me every now and then, but I do like the freedom to do what ever hits my fancy!

Figured you northerners would be outdoors more by now.......I certainly won't be again until late fall, early winter as last weekends outing kicked my A$$......all heat.

We had some venison sausage that was a gift from my daughters neighbor and boy was it tasty...

Took the kids out and planted a tree in the woods....Samuel had gotten it from an arborist that came to his school, so we planted it in the woods near our house. (That's the Orange Big Grip helpin' with the work...)

So I have been waiting for the conditions to be right to get out and hunt for some morels... today wasn't ideal, but it was my day off, so I headed out anyways. I took my new Tidioute Harness Jack along for it's introductory journey into the wilds. We did run across a variety of fungi, but not the type we were looking for. Still a fun couple of hours poking around in the woods though.

Here is a photo of a very nice King Salmon that I caught yesterday. The camera angle is poor making the measuring tape look like it's not even with the ends of the fish......but it is. The salmon is 41" long and was 26.5" in girth, weighing in at just under 40lbs!! Some places in Alaska have much larger fish, but this one is very respectable for my area. Picked him up at Bishop Point in 29' of water using a whole herring. He put up a really good fight but managed to get him to the boat after about 10-12 minutes of back and forth. My buddy Rick caught a 37" King and we had a really good day overall. Need to remember the camera next time!

Thanks Dimitri and Mike.....was really stoked to get such a nice one, hopefully will get a few more in the next few weeks while the spring run is at it's strongest.

As far as cooking it Mike, some will be BBQ'd and some will be smoked. Will need to freeze quite a few pounds but when I cook fresh salmon, I find less is more.......especially with King Salmon as they are by far the best tasting of all 5 species and have a nice fat content. Some melted butter and canola oil with a tiny bit of lemon added and some dill weed and tarragon to flavor the butter/oil, then fish flesh side down until it and the butter starts to brown just a little.....then gently flip it over, salt and pepper and lid on over low heat until just barely cooked through.......doesn't get any better than that imo

Scott, I know what you mean by the heat factor when camping. I do most of my outings in early spring, fall or early winter. I like the cooler weather. The summers here are hot and extremely humid. After having had a heat stroke I don't have a lot of physical tolerance for it. Those sausage look really tasty!

Mike, I think it very cool that you are teaching your kids the love of the outdoors and the importance of planting a tree. Down the road those types of experiences will be treasured memories for all. Great picks of the knives outdoors.

Trevor, That is a killer of a fish. You make my mouth water describing how you will cook it. I have fished a wide variety of fish in my day and there is nothing that describes setting your hook in a nice big heavy one, landing it and standing over it when it's cooking! Fun, fun, fun!

wow now that's a Salmon..here's my results of today's Turkey hunt and I was covered.

I really miss being in the woods, but that is one of a few reasons why I don't go out there any more.

no Joe we snap'em with our fingernails then soak the bite with peroxide or burn'em

Went on a little walkabout this morning in the Wisconsin woods and meadows...here's a couple shots, everything is fully green now! It sure does happen quick...

..also ran across this Painted Turtle sunning himself in the grass... (don't worry..no turtles were harmed in the taking of these photos! ) I love the colors on that last side view shot.

Great pictures, Mike! What a different world we live in, noting your long sleeves and ear flaps on your cap. Unless your covered up to escape the skeeters, it still must be cool up there in the north woods. The painted turtle sure has some beautiful color on it. We see box turtles and gopher turtles(tortoise) quite often but they don't have the color of the one you found. Is that red stuff sumac?
