You are welcome Dan And... well you asked for it.... here is the rest of the process... scrubbing with an abrasive pad and dipping in the oil after a quick drying... The axes in the bucket I let sit in the oil overnight to draw the oil up into the wood of the handle, as the wood was pretty dry.

A Plumb and two Craftsmen than I cleaned up...

Knice job, as always! Though it won't be old, I should have a new user axe in hand come Monday.

The axe won't be going in a shed, simply because I don't have a shed. It's more of a bushcrafting axe, so it'll stay with the rest of my camping gear that hasn't had a chance to see any use.

The Fiskars X-7 arrived yesterday. While I might not be going camping anytime soon, I'll hopefully put it to work around the yard. The photo was taken mere seconds after I pulled it out of the box, so the labels remain in place. Here is it with a Victorinox Farmer X.

Dan, that Fiskars is a great axe! I have 5 or 6 of them in various conditions, from almost new to beat to He!! It is super light weigh but very strong. Excellent choice

Scored this True Temper Red Warrior Kelly Works last week at a garage sale.
Had a serrated edge....LOL, but I straightened 'er up.
Weighs almost 5 pounds....we'll be crackin' some logs with 'er next week when camping!!

This may be a long shot, but could anyone tell who may have made this hatchet?
I'm hoping maybe someone can tell by the release in the handle. The hatchet can be removed from the handle I assume to replace it with a knife blade, which I do not have.

There are absolutely no markings. It had hollow celluloid handle originally. The were kind of orange in color and badly damaged.

As you can plainly see, I removed the celluloid, painted the metal and wrapped in paracord.
I may remove this a replace with wood.

I have several of these hatchets. I think Imperial made a lot of these with the relatively cheap handle material. I have one on my work bench right now with an epoxy repair to the handle. I have a similar example with no markings and also ones from Imperial and as I recall Schrade. I have one also from Queen with a "Q" stamping on it same size and profile. I'll have to dig them out and post a picture.

Went to a local junk shop near my home today, and found prices all over the place for diecast (hopefully, given how he prices three-inch stuff is ridiculous, I can get a little more out of the stuff I'm selling him).

Amongst some old tools, I found a pretty decent True Temper Jet Rocket camper's hatchet. I like the Jet Rockets, as they are fairly light, and well-balanced, but unlike most modern tube steel hammers/hatchets, they will take a beating and a half.

$20 was a little high to me, but fair once I looked up prices when II got home.

Took me a few moments (maybe half an hour?) with a file to get a good edge on it, by simply following the old marks.

Immediately thereafter, I put it to work, easily chopping through a sizeable limb to cut it down to size, then wrestled the broken limb free from the tree with a tow strap.

Getting a sheath for it, and it's definitely gonna be a go-to!

I used to get a lot of axes for $5 and sometimes hatchets for $3. Now I just can't find them that cheap anymore. Looks like them there days is gone for good.....

I was at an auction a couple weeks ago. I was bidding on a 1918 Indian Motorcycle Engine. Got way outbid! At the end of the row a guy was going fairly nots over one of the "Chopper" axes, missing both dogs. I remember when they came out and thought they were the biggest gimmick I'd ever seen. My neighbor used to watch me split straight grained Oak with a 4 pound Kelly. He had never done any manual labor, couldn't split wood. He was lucky if he hit the same end of the log twice in a row much less the same crack. One day he came home with a brand new Chopper. He tried splitting one nice straight block of Oak and didn't do any better than he did with one of my old axes.

Have the Choppers reached a collectors statis? I think my neighbor still has his in like new condition, original handle and both dogs still on it. If someone wants to make him an offer, I'll ask if he still has it?

I remember my dad got one of those back in the day. I remember him saying it was pretty much useless on rounds that were to big as the dogs couldn't kick out the split chunk. I still have that thing....minus the handle and dogs.

Thanks, that's what I thought. The last time I saw my neighbors I thought that was the first one I'd seen in years with the dogs still on it. I've been to sales and had to explain to people what the weird holes were for.
