I've used a variety of knives to field dress deer. I'd suggest a Buck 110 or Buck 112 or perhaps one of the other well made lockback knives available like a Uncle Henry LB7 or a Case Shark Tooth, Mako, or Hammerhead. They will all get the job done.
One thing I'd strongly advise against is a large fixed blade. Bigger isn't always better.

Good ideas Phil. I was going to suggest avoidance of fixed blade knives. I used a Geber Magnum Folding Hunter for many years and it worked out fine. I'd also suggest that you have a hunting buddy who has some experience standing by. If you are about to make a mistake, he can give helpful suggestions.

I carry a Buck 301 or a Schrade 8ot for all my gutting need

I do carry a fixed blade or a lockback style i.e. Buck 112 for splitting the pelvic bone and skinning.
PS.treat your hunting knives with mineral oil not patrolium based oils

Well I have a buck lock back with rubber grips. Thank you for the advice.

My son, who I was able to take on youth hunts many years ago though I never got to hunt, has continued hunting and is teaching me a lot. Thank you for the help.

Thank you for the tips. Using mineral oil is a great idea, I am going to have to get use to this now that I’m going to be hunting.

That Marbles is beautiful. If I get to a point that I’m comfortable with field dressing & hunting, I hope to use my dad’s old Case fixed blade & his old Winchester 30-30 at least once.
