Here's a scout the mailman delivered recently, I think it's a 42219C tang stamp. It also has a pattent number; anyone have info on this knife or the year this pattent number corresponds with? This is my first attempt at posting pictures using photobucket links since over 6 months ago, I hope it works.

Issued to Tint Champlin for combined compass and knife Nov. 3 1914.

just an FYI
You can get a basic ballpark year from the pat #.
650,000 is around 1900.
1,000,000 is around 1911.
1,500,000 is around 1924.

Redrider, does that compass work in your Catt? I have four of those Catts but none have functional compasses. From what I can find out, it is rare to find them in working order.

Nope, it's lost its magnetism. I thought about trying to hit one end with a magnet to see if it would start working again.

I may be wrong, but it seems to me that I read somewhere that the blades had to be in the open position for the compasses to work. You guys might try it and see if it works. Something about the metal creating a "field" or something to that effect.

Your on the right track.

In layman`s terms, the screwdriver and can opener blade need to be opened half way, both these blades are supposed to be lightly magnetized, however I find they loose their magnetism over the years, but that is another story. With these two blades half open they are suppose to create a horseshoe magnet, which, when the compass is located between these blades it is in a neutral zone that the surrounding steel blades will have no influence on the needle of the compass and you should get a fairly accurate reading

So check your two blades, if there is no magnetism left in them the compass will not work when the blades are open in the proper position. As far as calibrating it to true north there is a way to do that also, but if the compass don`t work, why bother, I won`t even explain that part.

Thought I might take a group shot of my Scouts - in my opinion it's harder to get a good group shot than to take a decent single shot. From left to right, 2009 REM/Bear commemorative, REM/UMC Utility R-4 (Camillus) that I have owned about 15 years +/-. the White handled Camillus Cub Scout that I bought last week, an Ulster standard BSA from the 60's/70's, an Imperial BSA from the post WW-II to 1950's era, and the Utica Featherweight Girl Scout.

I wonder if he's got 'im a good scout knife, MB.
