The day after the big snow, I went to the woods and watched the deer in the snow covered woods. Amazing how much more one can see when snow is on the ground! No wonder folks from up north talk bad about not being able to see many deer in the Florida woods. ::hmm:: That afternoon I saw a nice 6 point chasing does. Too cold for me to even consider dressing a deer like we normally do.
Friday afternoon I sat in the shooting house again and saw a a very aggressive 8 point doing his thing. Probably saw a dozen deer plus the buck. Again I chose not to take a crack at him.
Saturday I didn't go and Sunday evening I had 2 groups of deer feeding on the planted greens, a doe with 4 fawns and group of 6. One doe kept staring into the pines but I could not pickup any thing with my binoculars. Oh for the snow on the ground! ::mdm::
This afternoon the deer were acting crazy. 2 lone fawns were sneaking along looking at the corn feeder, never being at ease like normal visits. For some reason they took off, flat out running to the east, not flagging but a wide open running. Maybe 15 minutes later, I counted 6 deer coming to the feeder, 2 big does and 4 young ones, most likely the same group from last evening. They were slowly feeding along through the pines, heading for the feeder when a deer came running past them, again flat out, this time going west into the thick woods. That spooked the 6 that were headed to the feeder, they headed back the way they came. Something fixing to happen was obvious. I kept glassing but failed to see any movement until the last 30feet from the woods. He slipped into the trail the running deer had taken. Well that was nice, at least I got to see him again.
Since it was almost 5 o'clock and overcast, I decided to gather up my junk and head for the house. One more look and whoa, there's a deer coming out of the woods toward the greens! One look with the binoculars it was the same buck. .243 to the rescue.
Was a bit disappointed, I thought he was bigger than he turned out, still a decent 8 point from Starvation Plantation.
Notice the dark spot on the deer's brisket in the last picture, it appears to possibly an earlier gun shot. ::shrug:: Cut the spot out after the deer was skinned.
How the woods looked before the action started.

Congratulations farmer, nice buck enjoyed your observations, I had a interaction with a few deer on Saturday as I was returning home from TSC and the trash dumpster, a herd of about 14 came across the four lane highway just inside the city limits of Greenbrier. I had slowed down to the 40 mph city speed limit and was topping a little rise when I saw the deer coming down the gas line right of way in a dead run, l got on the brakes and the two of the biggest does went right in front of my truck(about 5 feet or less) and I look in the rear veiw mirror and the rest of the herd went behind me. They were running single file and were like stair steps large to small, I'm not real sure but I think the last in line still had some spots.
That's my tale and I'm sticking to it. Sorry no photos as I was a bit busy. ::woot:: ::handshake::

Nevada February wild ride.

One of my office views. Hot Srings Range, NV.

Life is good. Hope the same for you and yours!

Living here until I am ash dust in the wind, or until they kick me out. Got a spot picked out.

Gorgeous country, Jerry! ::nod::👍

I did some hiking today up on the mountain here at the farm, only up to around 1,200'. My Wooden Throne is getting old. The smokestack is at Mt. Storm, about 56 miles down the valley.

Deer season is winding down in the Florida Panhandle, one more day of modern gun, then 7 days of Primative weapons, muzzleloaders, bows and such ending March 2nd.
This afternoon I saw a good number of deer between 5 and 6pm. Saw 4 different bucks, a little spike, a big spike, a buck with 2 broken antlers and a pretty big 4 point that has no brows. Tempted but didn't give in again.
My tablet doesn't do well when it comes to getting detailed distance pictures, here is a shot showing 5 slicks and the big spike. He never got any closer and finally wandered off to the south, through the pines and disappeared.
He is a big bodied deer but didn't show interest in any of this bunch. The small spike and the buck with the busted up rack did a short chase or two around the pines. The rut is about in our part of creation.

Nice John.

If you don't mind me asking. How many chickens and what is the daily or weekly egg output.
Cost per dozen maybe after feed, bedding, etc?
Fascinating to me.
Been threatening myself to do it and chick season is coming on strong.

The feed and water appears elevated on the ropes. I assume so bedding, scat, etc don't get in it? No risk of tipping over? Likely both.

Jerry

Jerry, the suspended waterer/feeder keeps it cleaner as you suspected. The waterer on the floor is actually sitting on a heating pad, which is necessary when it's 14°. The hen house is around 8' X 12'.

We have had the white egg layers since 2018 and there were a dozen, down to 4 white hens now. The brown chickens are around 3 or 4 years old, the original 6 are still kicking and laying.

We're currently getting 4-6 eggs a day in the cold months with 10 hens, a few more when it's warmer. The original 12 white hens were laying a dozen a day, and you need help to use all of those.

My brother gets their pellets at the local Southern States, not sure how much a 50 lb. bag is going for. These chickens don't go into a yard, we have had predator issues in the past. Raccoons will kill all of your chickens just to do it, little masked demons.

Very nice John , great to see other setups .

This is my wife’s hobby,
We have a flock of 54 chickens right now , we try to make them as maintenance easy as possible , auto water , large gravity feeder , just open the door around 7 am to free range all day and they will go in the coop at dusk . Just keep one wing clipped so they can’t fly over our fence .

We’re currently getting around 20-30 eggs daily .
We need to fill the feeder up about every 3 days and change the nesting boxes hay once a week .

Mike
