Nice shot, Ken, and sorry to read about your hen. Raccoons are terrible chicken killers as well, and they don't even eat the chicken after they've killed the whole flock.

The raccoons here eat chicken. A couple of years ago one evening about 0-dark:30 I went to shut the chicken coop, and one was missing. Looking around, I found a wing in the chicken yard but no sign of the rest of the chicken. Obviously some predator had killed it, left the wing there and carried off the rest of the carcass.

I went into the barn and heard something on the roof. Shining a light on the roof revealed a whole family of raccoons enjoying chicken dinner on the roof of the barn - mom and 5 half-grown offspring. I dispatched them with a .22 magnum rifle. I couldn’t believe as I shot them one at a time and they rolled down the roof and fell, the others just sat there waiting their turn - while continuing to eat their part of the chicken! .::woot:: Like a carnival shooting gallery. The hardest part was holding the light while aiming the rifle and finding the angle to shoot them but not shoot a hole in the roof.

Two nights later I heard a noise outside and found a raccoon raiding the bin where we keep the dog food. There’s still plenty of them around. ::dang::

Papaw and Mamaw lost their entire hen house to a mink. It just cut the chickens throats and left about 20-30 laying around.

I once had a dog you need Ken. He was a serial killer.

I've relocated 10 raccoons this year and released three cats.

They were destroying hummingbird feeders and tomatoe vines and I think they even tried a few bites of Cherokee Purple tomatoes.

We hadn't been bothered since 5 years ago when we bought the unclimbable bird feeder pole. I hadn't trapped since then. I caught about 12-14 raccoons that year, so many I was unsure if they were different ones.( even though I was relocating them 8-10 miles away across the Ohio River).
I began putting white paint on them, but none were returning. :)

Too bad you don't own any knives, if you had a couple of Farmers Jacks laying around, you could have cut a notch in their tail for identification. ::sneaky::

Or their ear! ::rotflol:: That Russian Gray doesn't look none too happy to be trapped. πŸˆβ€β¬›

When releasing, the cats are scarier and wilder than most all the raccoons.

The FWC Gun and Light at Night Permit authorizes individuals to take depredating wildlife (beaver, bobcat, fox, opossum, rabbit, raccoon, otter, skunk or nutria) at night with a gun and light on land that they own or possess the written permission of the landowner. Under special restrictions, authorizes harassment (scaring) deer causing damage to crops with a gun and light at night.

The permit is not required to take wild hog, coyote, armadillo, black or Norway rat, and house mouse, with a gun and light during non-daylight hours.

Cost: $0.00

That’s what I thought to , it’s as big a German shepherd . Must be eating well .
Gotta keep a close eye on our chickens , we have 58 , we let them free range during the day .

My Colonial Sportsman with my days harvest of black aronia berries.

I usually scrub off old advertising, but being that this is for a cartography company, it fits the motif of outdoor adventure. I like it.
