Got around to processing the deer I killed on New Year's Day. That deer had a divot in his back that is visible in one of the pictures I posted, here it is again, notice at the tip of the left antler a divot in his back:
Here is a picture of the divot after the hide was pulled:
This evening, when making boneless chops out of the backstraps, I found the answer to what caused the divot:

- Divot/concave spot on deer's back
- Bullet encased in what I would describe as gristle. Surrounding area had a totally different texture than normal.
- This proves the toughness of a deer able to survive such an injury and still carry the evidence.

For all our hunters: I think it would be interesting to know which caliber you use most often to take a deer. About what percentage of the deer you have taken were felled with only one shot?

QS I use a .300 Savage 150 gr. primary rifle
or a 30.06 in 150 or 180 gr.
All my deer have been one shot kills
I will not pull the trigger till I have a kill shot.

Thanks garddogg56. Although not a hunter myself, I've long had a theoretical interest in ballistics, especially in what works consistently. Your selection of calibers is obviously highly effective. I suppose it almost goes without saying that even more important than the choice of caliber is the person pulling the trigger. I believe that your practice of waiting only for a sure kill shot is ideal. More than a few times I have encountered hunters who do not follow your sportsman-like behavior.

....and she looks every bit the part, great picture, and congratulations to you. I love Hockey, it must be very gratifying and special to watch her. There is no other sport which requires the degree of skills as those needed for Hockey, Baseball might be close but they don't do it on skates!!

Brother to Teagan..He and his brother both play hockey at NYA a private academy and they play on Maines only tier one team,they play almost year round and the play baseball too.

Beautiful bobcat I'm 78 and ain't never seen a live one in the wild, did see one my uncle had killed. I've heard them scream, when I was a yonker I and two buddies were walking home after a high school football game and we was passing by the city lake when we heard a blood curdling scream, needless to say we ran all the way home, which wasn't far for them but it was a mile and a half for me.

It is amazing to me that I see them so often in the middle of Dallas/Ft Worth. And I've seen them in the middle of the day and not just early or late. Excites me every time. Thanks.

Let's crank this thread up!
The deer I killed on January 1st caused me to experience some chest tightness. After being down with the heart Cath and stent plus bronchitis, finally tested the stent, no issues Monday the 12th,(that was one month to the day from the stent) thank the Lord! This afternoon there was no discomfort, but I got that rush also called buck fever when I spotted that rack coming out of the woods!
For a while it looked like we were going to have to make the whole year on one deer. I'm truly thankful for such wonderful bounty from our woods. The Lord is good!

- Monday afternoon, 3pt .243 Floated him to the house behind the cart, the woods are wet. This little guy was chasing two does around the pines beyond the oat patch.
- 4:30 this afternoon, 2/15, this 8 point came out alone, .243 to the rescue.
- Miss Joy took our picture.
