All About Pocket Knives

I picked the stockman up at a local flea mrkt. and theother at a gun show. I love how both still have the original etching, and that one is stainlees while the other is vanadium. Cool knives!!

I have exactly.... one.... a US M3 UTICA Kutmaster. An issued M3, demilitarized by grinding off the issue stamps on the finger cross guard, blade polished and Kutmaster etched in the blade. This is an early conversion one from late 1945.

This is the only Kutmaster I have.

Just saw this thread and wanted to get out some of my Kutmaster knives.
Camper/Scout Electrician rehandled in rosewood Jack rehandled in walnut Muskrat blade etched "Blake & Lamb" Stockman Barlow bolster stamped "New Holland"

Only have one Kutmaster, bought it new in 1972.

Might as well throw this one in here too........

Utica Patent Pend, a patent for the bolsters i'm guessing.And a Utica Knife & Razor christmas tree handle.

My Utica Kutmasters.

I forgot about these 5, until I saw Jerry's veterinary knife.

I picked up this 4" serpentine Kutmaster at a gunshow over the weekend for $1. As you can see it needs a full rebuild/rehandle as the celluloid is gassing. Would this be considered a 4 blade stockman, or a 4 blade cattle knife, or something else?

I’d call it a stockman - appears to have a spey blade, or what’s left of one after being incorrectly sharpened. Looks a lot like a pen now. Looking forward to seeing you redo it.

I call it a Stockman; but have heard it called a Cattleman.

Can't wait to see the rehandle. I have long wanted one of these knives (with most Stockmen, you lose either the sheepsfoot or a spey to get the awl, but on this knife, you don't lose either blade), but haven't got one yet because I am afraid of the celluloid. But, at one whole dollar, I would NOT have passed it up.

These 2 are both Kutmaster jacks that I rescued from the dollar box at the flea market. Both needed to be rehandled due to handle shrinkage and cracks. The larger one was rehandled with a dyed burl wood, and the smaller one with money, that is clear resin mixed with shredded US currency.

Sweet burl wood and very interesting money scales. Never seen one like that. Great pair. Looks like excellent work too, very well done from what I see.

Loving the green burl. The money scales are fascinating; certainly a conversation piece.

Recently, this "muskrat" pattern or style of pocket knife arrived in a group or lot of pocket knives that I purchased. It now becomes my latest example to be posted under this topic or thread. I did NOT purchase the group or lot of pocket knives to obtain this particular pocket knife. However, it did turn out to be a keeper. It will be a welcomed addition to my general, pocket knife accumulation. It is a KUTMASTER, two blades, two tang stamps, 3 7/8" closed, one spring, "muskrat" pattern or style of pocket knife. The main blade front tang stamp says, "KUTMASTER (over) UTICA, N.Y. (over) U.S.A. (over) V" The secondary blade front tang stamp says, "KUTMASTER (over) UTICA, N.Y. (over) U.S.A. (over) V" (the V means that the steel has Vanadium added to it) The main blade does not have a half stop, but has an ok opening and closing snap. The secondary blade also has no half stop, but it also has an ok opening and closing snap. The one handle side has a piece missing. But overall, this pocket knife is still in GOOD condition. It is definitely NOT ready to be put out to pasture. It did need a little bit of cleaning. I took some pictures and here it is.

I think you are right Charlie. Economic pressures did force some changes in the way things were made. As for the quality, Delrin could actually be considered a step up in quality over bone handles. Delrin is far more resistant to cracking and breaking than bone handles are. Personally I find bone handles far more ascetically pleasing than Delrin, but when these knives were made they were tools, not collectables. The toughness of Delrin arguably makes a better tool does the more brittle bone.

Hey Dale, just noticed your sweet old jack and looks a little familiar. Ill get a pic in here to show you. I posted one a few days ago in the EDC thread. Nice knives for sure. Hope to see ya in April and hope you have some fixed blades for sale like last year. Counting down.

I am planning on being there in April.
There have been a few changes in the show as the former show chairman has retired. His son is now on the board of directors along with a lot of new people. All the changes I've heard seem to be very positive. You can now pay your membership dues for the Oregon Knife Collectors Association online! A great step forward in my opinion. Also the first day of the show, Friday, had always been for Members Only and no one could join the club on Friday and get into the show. That has been changed and now someone who has not renewed their membership or has never been a member can join at the door, and go into the show on Friday. A big Improvement I think. Also they have a new website and I think it's also an improvement. At this point I think it's still being developed, this is not the final product but it's movement in the right direction.
Also, in a money-saving effort, the Knewsletter is available in electronic format, but for those folks who like the written format, they can still get that by paying a little bit extra when they renew their membership.
The show was rapidly filling up. Anyone who wants a table at the 2024 OKCA show had better get their application and payment in soon.
I am looking forward to an awesome 2024 OKCA Knife Show! See you there!
