All About Pocket Knives

Received a box from Kennedy knives yesterday.

He thoughtfully labeled the innards and even provided a knife to open them:

I wondered what that button on the side of the knife was, as it isn't a auto opener. There is a light but the battery is dead and there doesn't seem to be a way to change it.


First the stink, though that Case seems ok.

This one is very cool, really early multi-tool. Wish I was a knife mechanic so I could restore it. Haven't seen anything like it before. Couldn't make out the brand, was pitted a lot there.



The other group suggesting gloves to open wasn't for toxicity, but probably so as not to get finger prints on the nicely buffed blades!
They are much nicer than my poor photos.
A nice Schrade 1940T, and 3 blade Camillus and Kutmaster Stockman! Good stuff, thank you.

In fact the more I look at them, I realize just how nice they are. Very generous.

I got a box yesterday from JamieinWV. I'm not sure he understood what POS stands for. I think he thought it meant Perfectly Outstanding Stuff!
Upon opening the box, I found three envelopes, each sealed with knives in them. There was also one case sheath in very good condition.
Envelope #1 had some real goodies in it. there was a nice little Roy Rogers knife, a new or nearly so, Camillus Stockman, a little Case lock back and a worn sleeve board Case without standing bone handles another Stockman, a little thing I'm not sure what it is, and three steel machinist scales which are alway handy around the shop!

A Friedr Herder pocket grooming knife with an awesome nail file blade. brand new in the box with the paper sleeve. and Imperial mini camp knife in the Box, a Frost knife, a perfectly serviceable Case pen knife, a Roy Rogers Imperial trick knife, and Camillus with the flag scales, a Fox -n- Hound and a Proto lockback with a worn blade. Alsoa  Dale Earnhardt Jr lock back that needs little tightening.

But Jamie saved the best for last, four sets of stag handles and four sets of bone handles along with a set of scales for a knife that already had new bone handles installed. not sure what knife it goes to but I can probably use it, I know I can use the Stag and the bone scales.
Also in that third envelope was a brand new, still in the box and still wrapped Case
trapper with Corelon handles, but the coup de gras was the Finish Puukko with the original grind and original sheath! He said he had originally gotten it from Roland (Kootenay joe).
I am thrilled with all the goodies I received from Jamie, especially the puukko and the Friedr Herder, it is a very well made little knife! it will get some pocket time!

Jamie did great with this POS exchange by me, he sent me Perfectly Outstanding Stuff!

Wow...imho, this has been the BEST POS Exchange this year. Well, at least in the past three years for me. Everyone...and I mean EVERYONE has been so very generous in 'playing the game'. THIS is what it's all about. Friendship, giving and camaraderie...even when some of it stinks.

Received my “hot” mess from Phil yesterday, albeit, imho, not much stink. Had lots of fun sifting through these. Some (to me) very nice users and some candidates for next year. Nevertheless, a nice group of well played POS knives. From left column, and moving the right...they are:

A Craftsman, which I’ve never owned one before. Still very usable.
Schrade 881Y NKCA 1980. A usable carrier or to just have around the shop.
Hammer Brand Scout Knife, VERY nice and usable. This one is a keeper.
Thornton…yeah, look out next year
SS Single Blade / Hong Kong (Blood Bank) Nice cap lifter
SS 2-bladed w/wood scales, china, but usable for small projects
Single Blade folder, SS (Appalachian Trail etch) sharp little blade
USA 2 blade w/yellow scales
Large Girl Scout w/4 blades, very usable w/lots of life left
Medium Girl Scout w/4 blades. Again, very usable w/life left
Imperial 3 blade, black & white scales
“Scout” 3 blade, black scales
Victorinox style knife / china
Parker money clip, Japan

And last, but by far, NOT the least, is an awesome Queen #9 Stockman with Amber Cut Stag Bone. This one is really special, not only because Phil sent this VERY nice knife to me, but because our very own Jeff Finamore made and replaced the secondary spring due to a snap. So I have been blessed with a very nice keepsake from two of AAPK’s most regarded knifers. THANK YOU Phil! And THANK YOU Jeff for a job WELL DONE!

Another GREAT POS exchange and the adventure of exploring and sifting through a pile of dung, only to find some hidden gems that were suffocating from the torrid smell of rot. The gems I’ve received have already cleared the air.

Kolvir the multi tool is an HHH. Barnet tool co. Knife, really sweet. Early 1900's

Sorry Keith, I didn't take any pictures of the pile of crap I sent to north Alabama. I ran out of room in the box, did manage to stuff a few more in right before I sealed it up.
The Congress seemed to be all stainless construction, blades, bolsters and springs but with no stamps on any blade. I thought you might enjoy it. Don't keep it in the fur lined pouch, put it your pocket.

I received my treasure trove from Kolvir, and what a treasure trove it is.

Postal scale new in the box, fishing lure, Krypton bulb for a 5 cell flashlight, antique brass tire pressure gauge, sliding adjuster for a Marlin open rifle sight, antique fork, skeleton key, 30 caliber rifle cleaning brush, tub of Formula 15 Gunwax, nice Indian arrow head; knives including Hammer Brand Kamp King, Imperial pen, Bartender friend, ornate deer scene lock blade, SS multiblade, multiblade advertiser, scrimshaw golfer lock blade, Colonial advertiser jack, Pal single blade pen, Italian stiletto with broken spring, The Hatch ebony jack, and last but not least a leather holster cutout that is floral carved, right hand for a single action revolver. Whew!!!! Just by coincidence the other day I was checking my leather inventory to see if I had enough to cut out and make a holster for my Ruger Single Six and Wrangler revolvers. I do now. WOW!!

Man, an O. Barnett that's in pretty decent shape for roughly 110 years old. You gotta play to win!

OLDE CUTLER did a fine job letting "it" roll down hill! Seriously though, this is my first time in the POS exchange, as I've only been a member for a month or so. I'm impressed with the fun stuff! **NOTE: My 15 year old daughter has laid claim to the pen and the mini-butterfly knife. I personally love the mini-mini knives...so much fun! BTW -- a nice surprise was the Jantz kit knife, assembled by OLD CUTLER himself -- with nice stag handles! Sorry JamieinWV, my recipient --- I'll do better sending better junk next time --- it was my first time!

Received this pile from Boji.

I picked up Dale‘s package yesterday, and found some good stuff in there. My favorites were the colonial Barlow knife, haven’t had one since I was a kid, and the stainless hobo knife, which is going straight into my lunchbox to replace a busted plastic spoon I’ve been using.

Also worthy of honorable mention is a long pull Buck 303, and a redbone Schrade stockman about the same size.

He also included some other items, including a “Case xx” ballpoint pen and a tube of Quick Release oil. Now that’s gonna come in handy.

Thanks Dale, that was a great pile of stuff!

When it comes to knives, Jody744 knows his s#@#. He sent me this lovely package of effulent fresh from the Hiram, Ga. treatment plant. It's amazing what those sediment filters trap. In addition to the usual Pacific Ring paraphernalia he managed to scrape up some pretty nice stuff. There's a nice little USA made jack with smooth black handles that is totally pocketworthy. Also included were a pair of Boker branded kitchen knives that show no sign of use or abuse. Last but not least, he included a sweet little equal end Wards jack that came from the estate of long time AAPK moderator and guru, Johnnie Fain. That one will never leave as long as I'm around.

Thank you Jody for some great knives as well as some great fodder for the next POS roundtable. Well done!

Kem, Parker, Phil those are all worthy piles.

I am glad there was something you could use Parker.
The Quick Release oil might come in handy for some of that pile as well as other knives you may have.
I figured the Quick Release was the least I could do after sending that pile to you!

I find myself holding it and playing around with it often. It is very cool; I love old tools.

Dale, first thing I used it on was my EDC 858 lumberjack stockman. Two drops in the main blade pivot and it barfed out a wad of black gunk when I worked it a little. ‘Nother drop and some more working, and it’s noticeably smoother than ever.

I can easily pinch the blade and lever it out one handed on my jeans or jacket now. I’ve heard you guys talking about this stuff before and thought, “Yeah, right. Oil is oil.” But I can’t argue with results. You were right.

I got my package from Knifegnome today. I'm surprised it wasn't delivered by forklift, the box weighed about 8 pounds!

Anyway, there was definitely some POS in there, but also many other interesting items that a person like myself would find valuable. Scott must know me! It'll take a bit to go through this all, but that's half the fun.
