All About Pocket Knives

These two unfinished pocket knives were found among the "98". They are on their way to a new home. I was astounded when I found those 98 knives last year. I could not have imagined that I would more when I discovered them -- especially such a great number of knives. Well, it's happened again. Not like that. Just one. Yes, folks, I found ANOTHER knife today. Amazing!

Thanks. I don't know about the handles, if they are Micarta or not. Dad didn't catalog the material he used for his knives. Maybe someone here on the forum will recognize the material and be able to answer that question.

I could be wrong, guys, but that cover material looks suspiciously like G-10 to me!

Or, quite possibly linen micarta.
Whatever they are, I sure like the simple clean appearance of that knife!

The "feel" of the material is more like rubber than the feel of Micarta that Dad used for other knives... if that helps.

For sure it helps, MaryJayn, it helps add or eliminate other possibilities.
If the feel is rubber like, I'd say you could add Zytex (?) or Zylon (?) or Zytron (?) or something like that to the list. I don't think have the names correct, but it's that material Cold Steel uses for lots of their handles. Whatever they call it, it's a tough material that takes plenty of abuse in the C/S videos.

Very cool. Thanks for the info about that. I wish that Dad had catalogued his knives with the materials he used. Not knowing is why my descriptions of knives for sale is often vague. I don't want to get something like that wrong. Usually the photos can speak for themselves.

In my opinion, you have been describing Dad's knives very well so far, MaryJayn, and your pictures are great too.
You will learn and discover all kinds of new terms and different knife materials as time goes on, but for someone like you who is brand new to this hobby I think you're progressing along nicely. I've only been at this about 3 yrs. and I wish I knew more than I do, but I try to remember, it's not a contest, we're all learning new stuff all the time, so you just keep-on posting your pictures and descriptions and I have no doubt should you state something incorrectly there will be plenty of folks happy to offer the proper answers.
Take this topic as an example, other members will see this post eventually, and I'm sure someone familiar with that handle material will chime -in and let us all know just exactly what it is, or at least I hope so!

None of the Micarta in my collection has a rubbery feel, so I'd say Mark's guess is probably a pretty good one.

Yes, please do supply a photo(s); it will help me find pictures of your knife. I do try to take pictures of all of them, especially the ones that I sell online. But there are SO MANY knives

that it can be hard to keep track of those pics.

Yes, please do supply a photo(s); it will help me find pictures of your knife. I do try to take pictures of all of them, especially the ones that I sell online. But there are SO MANY knives that it can be hard to keep track of those pics.

Here's some pictures of the Jay Bigler knife I picked up from Mary Jayn. I wanted one with an etch . . . and I like the color blue . . . so . . . Mary Jayn also sent along a nice bookmark. This one came with a leather sleeve. Liner lock with a pearl inlay.

Oh man, John, you chose a nice one!
I keep going back to look at the Bigler all-black "01" knife that we were trying to determine the cover material on, cuz it's shaped very much like this one you bought and I'm quite fond of the pattern.
I like the all-black, but the blue on yours also looks teriffic, to say nothing of the MOP!
