All About Pocket Knives

Alright, got about a 90 lb doe down, shot her at 0723, took until right now to cut my way through the briers following the blood trail. Gonna pull her out, load her up and go put the Griz to work - more to follow later. OH

Mark, We clean and gut at the same time.
The short review on this Case fixed blade knife - buy one!
The longer review; the grip was quite comfortable, leather was smooth enough to look nice but rough enough to grip well (wet or dry). The blade is well shaped for skinning and meat removal; my only issue was the 5" blade length, 3-1/2" to 4" would work easier for our smallish Whitetails. That said, I encountered no major problems. The edge on the knife was amazing, don't know whether to attribute that to Trevor or to Case, but I couldn't have asked for better, the stainless maintains a superb edge. I would buy this knife in a 4" blade version in a heartbeat. Thanks to Scott for including me in this knife pass; it will ship to Mike on Monday. OH

OH, great review and shots, er, shot and pictures!

Question... I know you've been using a Buck 113 for the past couple of seasons. Could you say more about what parts of the dressing process you find easier or harder with the clip point of the Case vs the drop point of the 113? Same question regarding the difference in length?

Dave, the clip point vs. the drop point blade design made no practical difference in skinning the deer or in cutting off the meat once skinned. I found the 5" blade length to be a good inch too long when working on a small (80 lb.) deer. Specifically I had to watch my left hand placement much more carefully than with a 3" or 3-1/2" blade. On a large buck, or on a larger animal, the 5" blade would work well. The length was in the way when cutting meat off the butt, but worked well when cutting out around the colon - the relatively narrow blade width was well sized. OH

Ol' Griz has landed in Wisconsin! Arrived yesterday...thanks for getting him here safely Bruce.
First impression is that it's really light weight and feels great in the hand..very nicely balanced...I'm working over the weekend but hope to get out in the woods Monday or Tuesday and will snap some pics and post a few then!

OK! I was able to get out for a short hunt this morning..and took a few pics along the way to help document ol' Griz's time in Wisconsin....nothing too exciting so far but here's the pics anyways for your your viewing enjoyment. I'll divide them up into two posts I think...

First pic is coming in off the field edge, with the hardwood "oak island" in the background that I'm making my way out to. It's not surrounded by water, but rather it is surrounded on three sides by a large cattail swamp / marsh.
Next up is Griz stuck in the fencepost that is my trail marker for the path leading through the brush and marsh out to the island

Here we are partially out on the peninsula that connects the mainland to the island, you can see part of the marshy cattail swamp that surrounds the area we are heading out to
Here is a survey marker that is permanently sunk into the ground on a hillside along the trail.
This is a shot of Griz stuck in the brush making up my ground blind. This blind overlooks a trail running from left to right about 15 yards in front of me, where I passed up on a 4 pointer a couple weeks ago. the deer paused broadside right between those two trees right in front of me.
Last shot is of yours truly sharing some quality time in the blind with a fine piece of American made cutlery!

Here's Griz taking a rest in an old deer stand set up along a hillside on the island, overlooking a trail that runs along the edge of the marsh.

Unfortunately no deer today, but the real hunt begins in earnest next week when I spend a solid week in the woods of northern Wisconsin bowhunting the wily whitetail! Hope for some shots of Griz in action. Stay tuned...

Cool pics Mike - that Griz knife sure gets around! Nice rub, looks like the old boy used a solid sapling for rubbing away his worries - is there a line of them? OH
