Nice one B! Here's one I just posted on another thread.Old IKCO pen with a jigged bone scale on one side and a jigged black composition scale on the other.Looks factory done and I've had it for about 25 years.Someone theorized it may have been a salesman's sample but Steve Pfeiffer on another thread said there was no such thing.

I say it is a salesman sample, why? because I have a serpentine pattern IKCO that has the very same handle arrangement, jigged bone on one side and jigged black plastic on the other. My knife has never been touched,(apart), and is as it was when it left the factory. Not to mention I have a scout/utility knife from Imperial and have seen several other patterns with the same two different handle materials.

I agree with MRB. I've been told before by some older traders/dealers I know that knife companies handled sample knives that way in order to show prospective buyers or dealers what the knife would look like with the different handle materials or colors. While I don't have any knives with different handle materials, this old junior stockman does have different colored handles and it has definitely not been apart.

Did the factory or the salesman himself mark the sample knives?

I would think that the samples were marked at the factory.I have a couple of knives so marked and they seem to have used an ink of some kind that would adhere to the polished blade but looked as though it would be fairly easy to remove.I haven't tried to move the marks on mine.

Thanks for that info Steve! Has anyone "axidently" removed a sample mark and if so what was the deterant?
(I really like to avoid this)

Valley Forge 3 5/8" Cattle Knife. Master and Spay blades are
lazy and slow, bone pocket worn, but kinda neat old knife.
Found in a antique store on vacation. Valley Forge/Cutlery Co/Newark/USA
Boker owned them Levines 4th. Who made the knife? I tried
to match the punch but could not find a exact match. Pics
should enlarge.

Miller made them before they went out of business, then Schrade made some in the 1930`s on.

I haven`t seen any early ones with N.Y. Knife style jigged bone, yet, however anything is possible.

Took these in a hurry as the sun was going down. Lot's of shadows but I think they show the bone fairly well.
